About the Author
Nils Ch. Rauhut studied philosophy and history at the University of Regensburg (Germany). He received an M.A. degree in philosophy from the University of Colorado at Boulder, and a Ph.D. in philosophy from the University of Washington in Seattle. He taught at Weber State University in Ogden, Utah, and he is currently teaching at Coastal Carolina University in Conway, South Carolina.

"Die weisse Rose" a powerful voice

A wonderful book. I stumbled across this when looking for materials for my senior group who'd just seen "Sophie Scholl" with me. Unfortunately so much background info currently available is either in uni level German or Wikipedia style overview. I wanted something that gave a feel of the motivations and character of the people involved. This is it.

The German is wonderfully accessible for senior groups. Written as if Inge Scholl is sitting talking to you. No heavy political discourse, more "this is how it was for us as a family". You see what happened in the 30s that steadily led the characters to the point they could take no more and had to do something other than wringing their hands on the sidelines. You see how Nazism permeated life to the point that they saw doing nothing as a betrayal of conscience.

Of the 202 pgs only the first 75 are a telling of the "weisse Rose" story till 1945. Short but very clear and readable so you get a feel of the timeline and how fast it progressed once they made the move into political action. You also get a feel of their intellect and passion, and the role of "Vater" as parent, Fuhrer, Land and God.
The sections that follow are: the eight Flugblatter fliers; the two main trials (Scholl/Probst and Schmorell/Huber/ Graf); eye witness testimonies; reactions and voices.
It's a fascinating read. Highly recommended.

A different view of Hitler's Germany

This book is a very different view of WWII. You get to see Germany from the view of young adults resisting Hitler. These people grew up in Germany following Hitler, participating in the Hitler Youth until they were old enough to realise the wrongs the Germans were doing to the world. The reading goes quickly because you become so engrossed in the story. It is a very good read, and after reading Anne Frank it makes you view the Germans differently.

Arrived earlier than expected, BUT it's listed as "English and German" I expected it to be in both English and German text.

It is only German. I studied German to a conversational level, but it was nearly 13 years ago. I am fascinated by the White Rose story. I have the documentary, both in English and German. I had hoped this book was in the original German and with an English translation alongside. I have the English translation of this edition already, but I had hoped I could read the two side by side in a single edition. I feel I was misled. Still, meh. I'm delighted to own the original German edition, written by the sister of the students of the White Rose. Four stars, for feeling misled. Otherwise, BRAVO!

Eleanor Roosevelt Revealed

Stories about strong, creative, caring and versatile women who are former journalists and educators are always nourishing reading. But when one such figure writes about another with authority, power, perception and perspective, the reader is due for a special treat.

This is obviously the case with the biography, Eleanor Roosevelt Transformative First Lady (University Press of Kansas). Maurine H. Beasley, the author, has spent much of her professional life making Eleanor come alive in a respectful, but non-worshiping way. This is a book that both Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt scholars and simple lovers of good historical tales should enjoy.

Colorful figures sometimes have their lives and hues squeezed out of them by well-meaning but overly analytical modern biographers. Beasley mixes candor, honesty and setting deftly with feeling and movement as she describes a woman who was not known for her beauty and whose own personality was hidden behind husband President Franklin Delano Roosevelt whom she supported despite his affairs with female staffers. Indeed, Eleanor had her own life, as "My Day" syndicated newspaper columnist, adviser and one concerned over race relations and fostering social programs in a time when that was not a "proper" female role.

Beasley is a former education writer for the Kansas City Star, professor emerita of journalism at the University of Maryland, and a Washington Post staff writer. She is an author of other Roosevelt volumes and co-author with husband Hank Beasley of The Eleanor Roosevelt Encyclopedia.

The author describes Eleanor as a bit self-promoting, a trait perhaps fueled by a longstanding lack of self-confidence, or by a need to be on stage herself while Franklin found other women for comfort who were not politely talked about during wartime. She was certainly not the stereotypical First Lady and White House hostess her predecessors had been. Eleanor was a complex study in contrasts. Her newspaper column, radio appearances, press conferences and causes had their own audiences and fans, as no First Lady did before her.

A full supply of notes and source material is supplied for those who want to go further down the Roosevelt road. It also includes a highly readable, somewhat unusual, bibliographic essay that reveals Beasley's appetite for all things Eleanor and for her methodology in achieving her goal.

Franklin's death from polio with a secretary-mistress at his side changed the presidency. The republic moved on, but Beasley reminds us that Eleanor left her mark. So has Beasley, by giving us Eleanor's real persona.

Interesting angle on this First Lady

This book includes a number of anecdotes and facts that were new to me despite the fact that I'd read much about Eleanor Roosevelt before--and all those details were well integrated into a good overview of her life. What I found especially interesting was the author's insight into Mrs. Roosevelt's attitudes towards what might be regarded as women's issues and women's role in society. She was an active advocate for social reforms without overtly challenging what the author describes as "the ideology of separate spheres" for men and women. In short, this book offers some new perspectives on this much-written-about woman.

More insights into Eleanor Roosevelt

Although I've read many books about Eleanor Roosevelt, I found myself learning more about and gaining insights into her remarkable life. I am not surprised, though, because author Maurine Beasley has researched and written extensively on Eleanor Roosevelt (and other First Ladies).

As I read, I came to get a clearer picture of the challenges that Eleanor Roosevelt faced throughout her life. As First Lady, she could not take positions in opposition to her husband. Instead, with his encouragement, she went out into the world as his eyes and ears, and in doing so she improved lives and brought injustices to light. Beasley does an outstanding job of showing both E.R.'s courageous undertakings along with her acceptance of what she believed couldn't be changed fast.

An example that I love involves an organization that I worked for in its later transformation. The Southern Conference on Human Welfare had its founding convention in 1938 in Birmingham. I knew about this meeting and that Eleanor Roosevelt was involved and a speaker. Beasley gives an interesting account of the compromise she made when she refused to comply with a local ordinance to observe segregated seating of the races. She placed her chair in the center aisle between the groups. (p. 121) No one was arrested but it was also not a direct challenge to segregation. To me, this is an example of E.R.'s commitment to challenge injustice while not being directly confrontational. While she might have done more, she did at least take a stand, and as a prominent figure, that is significant. What the organizers of the conference might not have been able to do, the First Lady could more easily pull off. (When the SCHW was later dissolved, its educational branch, the Southern Conference Educational Fund, continued with the aim of focusing on efforts to confront poverty, racism and other issues facing the South. That is the organization I began working with in 1969.)

I enjoy biographies and histories especially, and this book is a wonderful combination. In important ways, some of the E.R's dilemmas, as eloquently described in the book, are relevant today. There is much food for thought, such as when to compromise and when not to do so, when to take a stand, and when to not take it slow because it is just not morally right. E.R's sense of commitment to improving lives came from her class privilege and her political family background -- how good it would be if more of the wealthy classes today felt a similar responsibility to the rest of society. She broke ground as a woman even though she did not see herself as a woman's right activist. Beasley weaves a fascinating account of this remarkable woman.

MUST BUY BOOK FOR 1D FANS!

My 14 year old daughters are some of the biggest fans of this group, and have been for years. This book is probably one of the best to come out. Each guy gets their own little chapter and there are TONS of pics and fun pages throughout the book. Im 38 and love this band as well--so yes--I did read it too. :) If your daughter or son is a One Direction fan---this is a must buy book. They will be very happy!

Look into One Direction's Heart and Souls

One Direction is a group that came and conquered the hearts, ears and minds of everyone. I am not their typical audience but I absolutely adore them! I have seen them in concert and they were phenomenal. When this book came out, I had already pre-ordered it and was waiting anxiously for it. It does not disappoint- the guys give you insight into their journey and you are privy to their insecurities, their hopes, fears and dreams. It is a well-wriiten and honest book and it is for everyone who loves these five talented guys with big hearts. Get it!! You will be happy you did:)

This is a great documentary and musical where you get to learn about the members in a really neat way. And the parents...the parents of these fast rising super stars say some pretty impactful things that get us parents thinking. I've got to say, I've never been a boy band fan, but when my daughter started liking these guys and I researched them out, I suddenly became one.

A terrific resource!

I am a ghostwriter, editor, and publisher, and for the past few years I have been recommending the first edition of this excellent book on my website and in my "Effective Business Writing" webinars. I am delighted that Cunningham and Greene have now published an expanded and updated second edition.

In this age of the internet, everyone is a writer. The quality of one's writing can affect the success of a career and even the success of an entire business. Unclear guidelines result in inconsistent, error-prone communications that can hurt the image of individuals and organizations. They also can lead to much wasted time, as people have to ask and answer the same questions over and over again.

Cunningham and Greene have created an excellent resource for business professionals. "The Business Style Manual" is concise, yet quite comprehensive. It should be on the desk of every business professional. Companies would do well to give copies to all of their employees.

Extremely helpful. Highly recommended.

After reading The Business Style Handbook, I found that not only was it extremely helpful, but it was also written in such a way that anyone can understand its concepts. Seeing as I have recently graduated from college, this book has helped me in my everyday life from casually writing with friends and family to more formal work situations and e-mails. The breakdown of The Business Style Handbook also allows its readers to flip through the index and find exactly what they may be looking for. I have already recommended this book to many of my friends and colleagues seeing that a person of any age can benefit from its content.

Finally!!!!

I've followed a pagan path for 7 years. I've blown through various internet "101" courses left and right. I reached a point on my path that I wanted to start getting ready to teach my children when they were old enough. I wanted to spare them the hours upon hours of taking notes from dozens of books, transferring to note cards, then constructing them into a format that was condusive to learning. Guess what....that's what this book is!!!! By the way Mr. Batty...where were you more than a year ago when I started that "little" project?!?!?!? If you remember back to high school textbooks...this is the textbook that would have been in a Wicca/Witchcraft 101 class. The format is unbelievable!! It has study questions at the end of each section and even a comprehensive "Final Exam". It's designed for a teacher as well as a student of the craft. I've started a magical group and we'll use this as a textbook in our education course!! I've ordered dozens upon dozens of books off of amazon.com and other sites. I've never left a review for any of them. But I couldn't sit back without giving this one the recognition it deserves. This book is new and I actually think I'm the first reviewer. Now it's easy to teach Witchcraft

For years, I have taught magick and witchcraft to a few students at a time - your typical master/apprentice style of passing down information. However, I have always been frustrated by the amount of information in my head and my complete lack of organization. There is SO much information out there about Wicca and magick, and the longer I practiced and the more I read, the more blank books I filled with spells, rituals, and correspondences, the more disorganized a teacher I became.
Finally, I found this book - with actual lesson plans, study questions and homework, exams, practical advice to teachers and students, suggested reading at the end of each lesson - the lessons are laid out so well that any teacher, with a minimal amount of preparation, can teach without worrying that the necessary information will not get passed on.
I hope that Miles Batty writes more books in the same way... this book covers what new witches need to know so well, that I have my fingers crossed that he'll write other books to help me teach the more advanced students - although this particular book of his DOES cover enough material in such a way that students can progress on their own afterwards.
Thank you Miles Batty for writing such a WONDERFUL book - it's a tool that every teaching witch should have.

Good for planning a class outline

This is a pretty good book. It has some good discussion topics and some really good questions that you can assign or go over in class. I did find a few problems with this book. There are several Gods/Goddesses that are categorized. incorrectly such as stating that Parvati is a Warrior God instead of a Goddess and claiming that Kali sprang forth from HIS brow. Parvati is a Goddess who is an aspect of Durga and Kali sprang forth from her (Durga) brow fully formed to fight the demons. There were several other inaccuracies when it came to pantheons but for the most part it is a good basic book that can really help you outline a beginner class.
