Beautiful Mind...

This book is beautifully written. I just got it today and read the first chapter. I bought it for a class I am taking in Unix Systems Programming. I was relieved when Molay's book arrived in the mail today. I was relieved that the book exceeded my expectations. If you can't afford Harvard, don't worry--the course is all here.

Maybe the best book on *nix system programming

This is an amazing book perhaps exceeding in value the canonical Steven's tomb Advanced Programming in the UNIX Environment, Second Edition (Addison-Wesley Professional Computing Series). What makes this book stand out among the rest is in its method of learning the system calls that form the api of unix programming. While other books tend to present the material by logically listing the various system calls by function. This book introduces the same apis by taking a well know unix command (like ls or cat) and then developing a working implementation from scratch. So, for cat, as an example, it first analyzes what cat does, designs a solution using the available apis ( which it shows you how to get by utilizing the manual pages), provides graphical representations of a working implementation, and then provides a fully coded example. This is a unique method of teaching that I have yet to find in any other systems programming book, including the most famous ones. The material is extremely easy to follow, even for a beginner I would say, actually making a rather dry subject interesting and compelling. Therefore you will find that you did not need to force yourself to become engaged in the material as you need to do with most technical books.

If you go through this book you will come away with an understanding of how the unix/linux kernel works and will have thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

Entertaining

If I could sum this book into a single word, it would be "wow." The book is a short and easy read, separated into chapters that correspond to different diary entries. Entries range from ghost stories to sordid encounters with married servicemen, and everything in between. Some of the material is explicit to say the least, so you probably won't be reading this as a bedtime story to your kids. I'm not a fan of reading erotica, but Gibson found a way to make the stories funny and entertaining. Be prepared, once you start reading this book, you won't want to put it down until the end.

In short, Trailer Park Confessions is a shocking, tell-all of the life of an anonymous writer that will leave you laughing and wanting more. If heroin were a book, this would be it.

There are little words to describe the rarity of a book like this. It's not your "typical" story of someone's life. Fictional or not, the character pokes fun at his life occurrences and you can't help but laugh at every segment that he chooses to share. Very easy read. Mature readers only, PLEASE. Don't be surprised if you find yourself peeing your pants from all the laughter!

Below is my review for the paperback BUT I downloaded this one to my kindle only to find it has way more chapters! I love how the author jokes about the typos. Yes, there are a few, however it doesn't make the book un readable. It's still disgusting as ever and my friends and I can't stop laughing at these stories.

Got my copy in the mail yesterday and have already finished it!

5 stars because this book is sexually explicit and raunchy. Brian Gibson did a number on this book. Here are my favorite highlights:

First off, who pissed him off in the prologue???!!!

"I Gave A Soldier Fireworks on July Fouth": I DIE!! I love how he desribes getting drunker and drunker and then convincing a soldier to come out of the closet. I had no idea alcohol could do such a thing! The way he descirbes this intimate rendevouz will have you pee your pants and kill over with laughter!

"Giving Birth To Possums": A Dead possum having babies and he and his sister deliver live baby possums while its mother is dead. Funny and hilarious, and the language and the way he describes the whole scene is nasty. I don't want to post clips here for language purposes, but you have to read it. Funny stuff.

"Sex With a Married Soldier" Had me dying of laughter. Brian Gibson descibes the worst sex he ever had with a married soldier, from meeting him on the internet, to the guy coming over to his house, to the guy performing terrible in bed. Again, I wish I could explain more here, but I want to keep it clean. This chapter is TOOOOO funny.

The beginning of the book is a girl finding a diary in her new house and the body of the book is the diary she reads. I wish he explained somewhere who wrote the diary, or what the prologue is or what the ending is. If you read the book cover to cover, you'll laugh and also wonder what in the world what he was thinking, but I suppose he leaves it up to your imagination as a lot of questions you might ask do remain unanswered.

There is a chapter called "How To Catch Your Man Cheating" which I suggest you read because it just might scare you.

All-in-all, I'm just glad that cheating men are exposed for what they really are in this book. I've read several books about one-night stand and the funny stories, but this is the first one that's about gay sex and military. I give this guy props for stepping into a touchy subject. Is he sure it is fiction?

MORE PLEASE. I NEED A SEQUEL.

Surprisingly good

This is a very engaging story. You like the characters and the story moves along at a good pace. Magical creatures galore. But..........if the author does not know how to spell, surely her computer has Spell Check. And if she doesn't have Spell Check, surely she has a friend who can proofread the books for her. Very poorly edited. She gave us a vile of poison. Not a vial, but a vile. And called it a vile all thru the scene.
I am currently in Book 3 and have already read a spoiler in one of the reviews. I don't mind spoilers, but now I am going to be wondering when one of the main characters is going to die.
I just finished the series. Cliff hangers all over the place, but a very satisfactory ending. The main character I thought would die, did, and I even shed a tear for them. The first book is the one with all the spelling errors - books 2, 3 & 4 improved considerably.

WOW, What a adventure!!!

I am so glad I got the whole set, I don't think I could of waited if I had just got the first book in this series. Loved this wonderful journey that Kiora, Emane and Alcander embark on. Magical creatures galore!! I laughed, sighed and giggled throughout. And then the author made me cry!! Dam it!!! I yelled at my kindle following my breakdown. This series is so well written that it pulls you in so you feel apart of the story. I would recommend this series to anyone who wants to feel the story come to life.! And after the ending I don't think I can stay mad at the author for that, YOU KNOW WHICH PART. Awesome

As I'm writing my review my heart is hurting I never thought it would hurt so much, I have this book for over a month but since I had a feeling about Emane I prolonged my reading. My heart is in million pieces I but the ending boy the ending was brilliant I just wished it had a little different with him in it. I love this story it really got to me, I can't believe it took me this long to grab this book and now that I did is so hard to let go.

Excellent translation and overall edition

This Oxford translation of Aristotle's Nicomachean Ethics is the work of Sarah Broadie and Christopher Rowe. It's easy to pass over since Amazon doesn't have a cover-photo nor any product description, but it should be one of the first translations you consider getting of the Ethics.

The translation is proceded by an 80-page 'philosophical introduction' by Broadie that is superb. She does a good job explicating the Ethics in a reasonable and general way, given a lot of the dispute over the most basic analytic concepts in the literature (for instance the inclusive-dominant debate over eudaimonia). The introduction alone will make it essential for anyone trying to write on the Ethics while giving an overall view of scholarship out there.

The translation itself is very readable, with large print and the proper citations in the column.

Watch out for editions that don't include those, they are usually useless. For instance, Barnes & Noble bought the rights to an edition of the Ethics (one not available on Amazon for obvious reasons) and produced it in a paperback form. It doesn't have the numeric sections accompanying the text, though, and the translation itself is simply a reprint of a fifth edition translation from the 1890s (if an author felt he had to do five editions in ten years, simply spitting it out again 100 years later is a travesty).

A lot of work on the Ethics cites the Barnes collection, and I think it is useful to read this translation side-by-side with that one. My biggest objection is in how this Oxford edition translates "phronesis" and "sophia." The distinction between these two types of knowledge are crucial in understanding Aristotle's ethics. "Phronesis" is usually translated as 'practical wisdom,' and sometimes as 'prudence.' "Sophia" is usually translated 'knowledge.' In this translation "phronesis" is translated as 'wisdom' and "sophia" is translated as 'intellectual accomplishment.' It is very important to keep that in mind when you are reading the text, and if you are interested in Aristotle's discussions of prudential excellence. Anytime 'wisdom' appears in this text, Aristotle is talking specifically about practical wisdom/phronesis, and likewise with 'intellectual accomplishment.' Any apparent vagueness on this note is due to the translation, and frankly I'm surprised they decided to do that. Luckily I read Broadie's introduction, which mentions this on page 46, or else I might have been confused about this later on. Thus, one needs to be very aware that 'wisdom' in this translation is being referred to as a very specific kind of wisdom, namely the ability to reason practically. Not taking this into account will lead to some erroneous interpretations, I believe, and will make some of the discussions in the secondary sources seem confusing and obscure when they don't need to.

Part 3 of the translation is the line-by-line commentary, another commendable quality of this translation that makes it essential. They even do things like chart out the disposition as well as provide useful cross-references. A useful glossary in the back is also helpful, in fact probably essential to deal with any translation confusions like the one I outline above, especially if you are trying to compare translations. There is also a brief topical bibliography of select works as well, and they separate the index into names and subjects.

Overall, this is a great edition. Very well though out, very very useful to the student of Aristotle.

Broadie and Rowe's translation of Aristotle Nicomachean Ethics

I have read many translations of Aristotle's Ethics, and this one is the best one as an introductory text. This is for 4 reasons:
1. The translation itself is very accessible and yet do not betray the original prose style of the work. I find this translation to be the best in understanding Aristotle's ideas.
2. The line by line commentaries for each chapters, plus the summary for each books/chapters are invaluable in itself. It is worth to buy this book just for the commentaries.
3. Broadie has a very good introduction to Aristotle's Ethics, I found this to be extremely useful.
4. The author/editor/translator have compiled a very good bibliography based on "themes".

Highly recommended as a first book that should be picked up on this subject.

Having said that, any serious scholar of Aristotle's Ethics will never satisfied with one book/source, one needs to consults other sources on this subject to truly understand Aristotle's Ethics. The good thing is that, this subject matter is very mature in a sense that there are many sources that you can go to.

Half-assed Kindle Version by Oxford

Congratulations, Oxford. You have taken what should have been a valuable edition and butchered the Kindle version beyond belief.

Another reviewer talked about the importance of having the Bekker numbers. This edition does have them. In two places--the philosophical commentary is not interlinear by the way, but in different sections--and not in a form they can be easily used.

Here is the way the beginning looks in the Kindle edition...

Nice, huh? Then a zillion lines later there is a philosophical commentary that refers to the Bekker numbers without hyperlinking them. So even if you fight your way back to the right portion of the text, the line numbers are, if not useless, a further waste of time.

I feel sorry for the scholars who put in so much work, only to see this mess.

The bottom line is this. If you want one Kindle edition, look at the Hackett-Irwin version or the Chicago version. Both are way better than this nightmare. If you want Broadie's commentary, plan on reading it with a open printed version alongside. Nice job.
