The Unmaking of a Documentary

Very interesting treatment of not only the Steven Avery murder trial, but of the machinations employed by documentary makers to shape the perceptions of a nation of Netflix users. The omissions and juxtapositions skillfully used by those involved with "Making of a Murderer" are held in stark contrast to the actual transcripts and reports considered by Avery's murder trial jury in determine his guilt.

Watched "Making of a Murderer?" You need to read this.

Everyone who watched "The Making of a Murderer" should read this book. Period. Griesbach uses the trial transcripts, word for word, to demonstrate several places where footage was edited by the filmmakers in a deceptive, misleading way. I still believe that it was correct to throw out Brendan Dassey's conviction because of his attorney's disgraceful conduct towards his client, but this book builds the case step by step, beyond any reasonable doubt, of Steven Avery's guilt in Teresa Holbach's murder. There is so much missing or misrepresented in the documentary that those who watched it and believe Avery was wrongfully convicted a second time need to read this book. It's a game-changer.

Well written with some well substantiated theories opposing MaM

Like many others I binged Making a Murderer, and following that I read Griesbach's The Innocent Killer. I thought it was a very interesting read, but the part about Halbach's murder felt shallow. In that book Griesback believed in Avery's guilt, but didn't convince me of it. When Griesbach announced he was writing a new book, and still believed in Avery's guilt, instead of his innocence, "even" after MaM, it caught my interest. I wondered what he would come up with? Because imo Kratz hasn't ever been convincing in any of his interviews following MaM.

I have the say it took a while before this book really caught my interest, whereas its predecessor was interesting from start to end. This book didn't hook me up until chapter 7 or 8. This doesn't mean the others were boring, but they just don't contain as much information that was left out of MaM.

In the early chapters Griesbach again failed to convince me of Avery's guilt. Completely. I believe he also made some mistakes. For example he often refers to Avery burning a cat, and then goes on to say animal cruelty can be a sign of a future killer. However, the official police report of this incident says it wasn't Avery who burned the cat. Griesbach also spents some time about Stachowski being abused by Avery. However, he omitted the fact that when Stachowski was interviewed by the police about this, she reeked of alcohol and there were no red marks on her neck or anywhere else.

However later in the book, he does become more convincing. The *67 and the luring of Halbach theory that Kratz has been telling in the media very poorly, has been explained in this book more detailed and more convincing. He also makes the "Magic Bullet" a little less magic and overall does well in opposing MaM.

Am I convinced of Avery's guilt now because of this book? Actually, I just don't know. Avery's current lawyer is so convinced of his innocence. Buting and Strang still are. And they know Avery better than Griesbach does. Some theories in MaM have taken a hit though, but some are still standing strong.

If you don't mind reading about a different view on the Avery case, this is a must buy.

About the Author
Alan A. Baker is a Senior Research Consultant for Advanced Composite Structures Australia and Emeritus Research Leader Aerospace Composite Structures, in the Aerospace Division of the Australian Defence Science and Technology Group. He has over 45 years experience in advanced composites including 10 years in the Rolls Royce UK Advanced Research Laboratory. He is recognized for pioneering work on bonded composite repair of metallic aircraft components for which he has received many awards, including the 1990 Australian Government Minister s Award for Achievement in Defence Science, the 1999 Royal Aeronautical Society (Australia) Lawrence Hargrave Award, the 1999 Royal Aeronautical Society (UK) Specialist Gold Medal, the 2011 Engineers Australia AGM Michell Medal, and in 2015 he was elected as a World Fellow of the International Committee on Composite Materials.

Murray L. Scott is Chairman of Advanced Composite Structures Australia, the specialist engineering spin-out company of the world renowned Cooperative Research Centre for Advanced Composite Structures, of which he was Chief Executive Officer for over 13 years. He is an Adjunct Professor of RMIT University and has 35 years aerospace engineering experience working in both industry and academia. He is a long-standing World Fellow and has served as President (2001-03) of the International Committee on Composite Materials. Since 1994, he has represented Australia on the International Council of the Aeronautical Sciences and has served in various capacities, including as President (2013-14). He continues to focus on developing new technologies for the design, low-cost manufacture, and support of application-critical composite structures in aerospace and other fields.

Good idea spoiled

The idea of this book is excellent, and long overdue, but the author's foggy cloud of pop-feminist verbiage spoils the outcome and casts doubt over the whole project.

You might, however, find the charts at the back worth the price of the book, despite their amateurish appearance.

Thin But Not Quite Forgettable 62/100

The concept of changing or removing memories is a popular one in science fiction. But while the most successful attempts at that idea often take on dream-like and puzzle box qualities, "Forget Me Not" is more direct and concrete (whichever method you prefer will probably influence how you react to this story). Very short, even by short story standards, the characters are given only the simplest of details, and its semi-ironic conclusion is more pat than sublime. As a hasty sketch of an idea given shape, it works just enough for a mild recommendation, but it will likely leave the reader wanting more.

A great short story that left me wanting more

Ever wonder if you could just hit the delete key on certain bad experiences in your life and just forget about them as if they never happened? That's the overall concept of this very interesting and well-written short story. It is a very quick read, but it kept my attention from the first page all the way to the end, so much that I kept tapping on the side of my Kindle Fire screen to continue reading the story, but alas, it was over! I wish it was a bit longer, but overall, I really enjoyed the story and hope Mr. Bentley-Mix is considering putting together an anthology in the near future. This one should definitely be included! While very short, I believe "Forget Me Not" is worth a buck for a good quick read. I look forward to reading more short stories from this author.

Why you need a new map of the female universe

Like some guys I know, you might be tempted to skip this introduction and jump right to the sex chapter. And if you’re chuckling right now, it probably means you already did it. Or were about to. It’s not a bad choice, actually. Just a little selfdefeating. If you’ve been in a committed relationship with a woman for more than, say, a day, you know that going just for what you want isn’t actually going to get you what you want for very long.

A week, maybe?

But let’s be honest—one of the main reasons you’re looking at this book is because you are trying to get something you want. Not sex (well, not just sex), but a more fulfilling, harmonious relationship with your wife, one that isn’t quite so hard or confusing. And the back cover gave you the wild idea that understanding her might actually be possible.

Either that or for some reason the woman in question just handed you this book.

Hmm.

Well, either way, take a look at the revelations we’ve uncovered. We think you’ll be convinced. Each chapter explains things about the woman you love that may have often left you feeling helpless, confused, or just plain angry. Each chapter points out simple, doable solutions. And since we average, semi-confused guys have to stick together, that’s why, even though Shaunti and I are both authoring this book, I’ll be the one doing the talking.

First, Some Background

In 2004 Shaunti published For Women Only: What You Need to Know About the Inner Lives of Men, which quickly became a bestseller. Based on nationally representative surveys, focus groups, personal interviews, and other research with thousands of men, it opened women’s eyes to things that most of us guys had always wished our wife or girlfriend knew. Things like most of us need to feel respected even more than loved. Or that men, besides just getting enough sex, also have a huge need to feel sexually desired by their wives.

I’m not sure exactly why, but women everywhere were shocked. And by the flood of letters from around the country—
from both women and their grateful husbands—Shaunti and I have seen how much good can come when the opposite sex finally has their eyes opened to things they simply didn’t understand about us guys before.

In this book, the shock is on the other foot. Now it’s their turn to exclaim to us, “I can’t believe you didn’t already know that!”

When Shaunti’s publisher first approached us about doing a companion book to For Women Only to help men understand women, I had two major concerns. First, I didn’t think guys would read a “relationship” book. For most of us, the last relationship book we read was in premarital counseling—and only because we were forced to. But more to the point, I doubted that women could ever be understood. Compared to other complex matters—like the tides, say, or how to figure a baseball pitcher’s ERA—women seemed unknowable. Random even.

I’m not sure exactly why, but women everywhere were shocked by how men thought.

I explained my skepticism to one early focus group of women:

Jeff: Guys tend to think that women are random. We think, I pulled this lever last week and got a certain reaction. But when I pulled that same lever this week, I got a totally different reaction. That’s random!

Woman in group: But we aren’t random! If you pull the lever and get a different reaction, either you’re pulling a different lever or you’re pulling it in a different way.

Shaunti: What men need is a sort of map to their wives or girlfriends. Because we can be mapped. We can be known and understood—firm ground.

Jeff: Uh, no. See, guys think of a woman as a swamp. You can’t see where you’re stepping, and sooner or later you
just know you’re going to get stuck in quicksand. And the more you struggle to get free, the deeper you get sucked in. So every guy on the planet knows that the best thing to do is just shut down and not struggle and hope somebody comes along to rescue you.

When I came to, Shaunti and the other women in the focus group assured me—and I have since seen for myself—that guys don’t have to live in a swamp. That realization led us to the eventual subtitle of this book: A Straightforward Guide to the Inner Lives of Women.

We have been astounded and humbled at the reaction to these simple, eyeopening truths. In fact, the book you are holding is actually the second edition of this book—which is needed because there was clearly a desire for this ongoing research.

Both For Women Only and For Men Only sparked a huge wave of encouragement and hope among ordinary men and
women just like me and Shaunti, selling more than 1.5 million copies in twenty-two languages. We were flooded with e-mails and comments from men and women at our marriage conferences, saying things like “This saved my marriage” and “After ten years together, I finally know how to make my wife happy” and even “Jeff, I owe you one, buddy.”

But since we’ve continued to learn new things, we also wanted to keep the book current. For this new edition, we have
included some fascinating new findings, including the brain science behind why women sometimes think as they do. Plus we’ve added a new chapter—“She’s Not Making Sense”—that decodes those unpredictable reactions that she thinks of as, uh, normal. After seeing the impact of this research, I realize that we really did uncover life-changing insights. Surprising truths that average guys like me need to hear from an average guy and be encouraged that if someone like me can learn it and do it, they can too.

Great read for both men and women but definitely men

Great read for both men and women but definitely men. I think some stuff in it a lot of women dont even know about themselves. Also for those who do know, it gives you great ways to actually put what you are feeling into words.

For the men, if you read you MUST use it to your advantage and put into action. Not use it to down play your significant other. Use it to be more healthy in the way you communicate and interact with your significant other.

Great set of books, really life changing stuff

Great book. For Women Only is also great. Eye opening and sometimes shocking.

Don't listen to these books on audio. The authors read them themselves and talk to you like you are a child. They are super cheesy and make you hate the book because their voices are so annoying.

A Major Work

Full disclosure: I have known the author many years and value his teachings very highly. This work is a major breakthrough in Western exposure to the Bardo teachings. The explanation is very clear and the question and answer sections are helpful. I believe that Western scholars continue to interview the author to gain still greater clarity of detail in these otherwise unavailable teachings. I have known this book since it first came out in the 1980s.

Only recently have I been able to read it slowly and really absorb its teachings. It is easy to read, but it requires close attention and meditation to comprehend in depth. I can not claim that I have mastered these teachings, but reading this text several times and finally meditating on it has taught me a great deal.

The author is a distinguished Lama and has given many retreats and Tantric empowerments as well as Sutra teachings. It has been my privilege to participate in some of these events. I could never adequately repay him for what he has done for me, how much less can I express it properly here. This work shows the depth of his learning and awareness.

It might not be the best thing to read these Bardo Teachings as your first exposure to Tibetan Buddhism, but I think even a newcomer could get something out of them. As I said above, I have read the teachings over and over again and each reading has revealed more. This is a book to treasure.

well what did you expect, with this title?
This book makes a great effort at explaining the bardo teachings, which are pretty complex. Don't expect this little tome to go in great depth, but it is a good primer for exploring these teachings.

From this humble premises God would light a spark that would fuel one of the biggest and most powerful revivals of the last two millennia. Through William J Seymour, thousands would be baptized in the Holy Spirit with many receiving the gift of tongues as well as divine healing and freedom from demonic possession.

Interesting Look Into a Controversial Man

William Seymour has his supporters and his critics. His critics call him a mystic, a man who sought experiences his whole life. His supporters call him a man who was hungry for God, tired of dead and dry religion. He wanted Pentecost and he wanted a touch from God.

What can we learn from these short sermons that he preached at the Azusa Street revival in Los Angeles in 1906? First, we learn that Seymour clearly wanted people to go after Jesus. Like Frank Bartlemen, he didn't want Pentecost to replace Jesus. Secondly, he believed in two works of grace following salvation. This would be a believer must be saved then sanctified and then baptized in the Holy Spirit with the initial, physical evidence of speaking in tongues. Thirdly, he believed this Pentecostal revival would spread to the nations which it did.

Overall, interesting to read his sermons. While not deep in their content nor long, they reflect a heart that, while not theologically perfect, longed to glorify God in my opinion. I don't fully agree with Seymour on all that he taught but he seemed to have a heart for God from these sermons.

Wow!

What a treasure to have these messages! While they themselves would have us go further and deeper, the honor God Himself gave men and women like this speaks to the fact that we need to "honor our fathers and mothers." It is part of getting our spirit right before God. Asuza Street saw creative miracles. There was manifestation like over Israel - fire was on the rooftop, such that the fire department would come out. We need the humility of such faith, which overcomes the world, flesh, and devil. Where it challenges me and my intellect - that is just what is needed for more breakthrough.

Good financial advice for Christian couples

The copy I have is a pre-release copy, which as I understand it has no strings attached. Larry Burkette wrote this book a few years ago. This is a re-publication of his work.

Starting Out Right by Larry Burkett is a book about finances and how they can be handled by young married couples to avoid financial problems in marriage. He wrote a number of books about money management and its application to Christian living that are similar to Dave Ramsey’s writing.

I use one of his other books in my ministry (Your Finances In Changing Times), which has been helpful to my people in their lives for those who apply the principles he teaches there. I believe this book will help those who use his good advice in their finances.

I like this book; Burkett’s money matters advice is very good. I strongly recommend this book.
