Could you live with only being able to control your left foot? Could you tolerate feeling as though you were a prisoner in your own body? In My Left Foot, Christie Brown paints a vivid picture of his challenging and incredible life. The author's writing style clearly demonstrates his experiences moving through life with the crippling effects of cerebral palsy. Readers who have no experience with this devastating disease will particularly benefit from the account of Mr. Brown's life, and will be taken on an emotional journey they won't forget. Upon finishing this book, it is apparent Mr. Brown accomplished his goal of showing the reader the challenges of living with a severe impairment. When I read the last page, I was moved, inspired, and thankful for having had the opportunity to read this enlightening book.

Brown effectively shares his struggles of living with cerebral palsy throughout the book. In the introductory chapter, he describes his home life: being number ten of twenty-two children in the family. Because of his difficult birth and obvious affliction, his parents chose not to name him, in what seemed like an effort to to not get attached to him. As he aged, doctors said there was no hope for improvement, as he had not met any developmental milestones or shown any sign of intelligence. This outward appearance, of intellectual vacancy, was not representative of what was going on inside Christie. He was effectively locked in. But inactive silence would not be his fate. At five years, to the shock of his family, he painstakingly picked up chalk with his left foot and wrote the letter A: “Then I looked up and became aware that everyone had stopped talking and were staring at me silently. Nobody stirred.”

As the book progresses, Brown tells his story through chronological order, grouping chapters with the ages he was. Chapter 2 describes his life when he was 6 and 7 years old, when he was able to sit up and crawl. By Chapter 3, he is 7, and can sit up without support, but cannot feel himself. He describes these as his best years, where he has good friends, respect, and acceptance for who he is. Although his family doesn’t have much money, he is happy and considers his childhood a good one.

By Chapter 4, Brown is growing into an older boy, and begins to notice people look at him strangely. He cannot walk, speak, dress or feed himself independently. He realizes he is helpless. This discovery morphs into a self-hatred. However, he eventually develops a hobby: painting. His freedom of artistic expression allows him to rise above his depression. “I was fascinated by the little solid blocks of paint—blue, red, yellow, green and white. Later in the day I sat and watched Paddy as he tried to make some impression with the paints on a piece of white cardboard…but he only made a mess and in a queer way I felt annoyed with him—and a bit jealous.” By Chapter 7, as a 13-15 year old teenager, he’s painting everything. Although he doesn’t leave the house, he’s preoccupied with his neighbor Jenny and develops a crush on her. However, when she looks at him with pity, his feelings for her change. He realizes that she never liked him in return; she only spent time with him because she pitied him. He finds her pity to be insulting and it crushes him emotionally, as his hopes for “normalcy” are ruined.

In his later teenage years, Brown falls into a depression again due to his “narrow existence.” He is lonely and restless. Painting no longer stirs his soul. He longs for freedom. He wants to be ordinary. His new passion is to write stories, but he continues to wrestle with loneliness. He feels his life is God’s practical joke on him.

In his adult years, he is crushed when his hopes that a new treatment that might cure cerebral palsy are quickly squashed. When he meets and communicates with Sheila through writing, his hope is renewed, he now has a purpose for living. In writing, he discovers that he’d like to pen his autobiography—hence, My Left Foot is born. He finds solace in music, writing, and in a new clinic which helps him to tackle new breathing techniques, improving one’s pride, and not focusing on pity. He is very happy with the tremendous results he receives through speech therapy at the clinic, as he is now able to speak with more clarity. The book ends on a high note, with Brown having hope for the future and accepting who he is.

The book was a great read overall; however, the pacing near the middle was a little slow. In his later teenage and adult years, my attention wandered a bit, as I was eager to move forward with the storyline. For some readers, the description of his depression in his later teenage years might seem repetitive of the depression he faced earlier in his life, but to leave it out, would be a dishonest reflection of his journey. Despite these shortcomings, the book teaches a lot, not just about cerebral palsy, but its affects individuals and their families as well. It is difficult to imagine what it would be like to live with this crippling condition, but Christie Brown successfully opened my eyes and I was inspired by his tenacity to find his purpose and his triumph over adversity.

This book is for people who love stories about the underdog who overcomes seemingly impossible odds, while learning to love themselves regardless of the hand life dealt them. I found myself emotionally involved with Brown's story, rooting for him and hoping that he would find joy and peace. His story is certainly inspirational, and it reminds me to be thankful for what I take for granted: the freedom to easily move and speak.

This book is great reading

"My Left Foot" is about a young man, born in 1932 to a Dublin bricklayer, with cerebral palsy who cannot even control his limbs let alone write his own autobiography. He starts off with his childhood: his relatives and doctors are telling his mother that he will amount to nothing; he was a moron. But his mother never gives up on him, for she knew that inside his useless body was a very capable mind. She teaches him to write with his left foot. By the time he's five years old, he knows his whole alphabet! He goes on and tells about his life growing up with twelve other siblings. He speaks of how the startling realization, that he was not like everyone else, changed his life. And he finishes with how he finds inside himself what he had all along. Christy Brown really shows his talent for writing in "My Left Foot". He tells his story without ever being depressing and sulky and there are parts that will just make you laugh out loud, especially when he talks about his first attempts at writing his autobiography.
The movie is also great; Daniel Day-Lewis, in his Oscar winning role, is excellent. It gave the book the recognition it deserved as being a great piece of classic literature

But, as the chapters of this volume illustrate, what is normative in one film industry may not apply in another. The widespread practices of dubbing, postsynch sound and "playback singing" in some countries, for instance, provide an alternative means of understanding the location of the voice in the soundtrack.

Through seventeen original chapters, this volume situates the voice in film across a range of diverse national, transnational and cultural contexts, presenting readings which challenge traditional readings of the voice in film in exciting new ways. By taking a comparative view, this volume posits that the voice may be best understood as a mobile object, one whose trajectory follows a broader network of global flows. The various chapters explore the cultural transformations the voice undergoes as it moves from one industry to another. In doing so, the volume addresses sound practices which have been long been neglected, such as dubbing and non-synch sound, as well the ways in which sound technologies have shaped nationally specific styles of vocal performance.

In addressing the place of the voice in film, the book intends to nuance existing theoretical writing on the voice while applying these critical insights in a global context.

Projecting a sunny, carefree image with folk-pop hits such as "California Dreamin' " and "Monday, Monday," the Mamas & the Papas pioneered the kind of complex internal dysfunction later popularized by Fleetwood Mac. Greenwald, a rock journalist and longtime fan, collects quotes from new and existing interviews with M&P friends and associates to tell the group's soap-opera story. The band itself is represented by new interviews with surviving band members Michelle Phillips and Denny Doherty, a previously unpublished interview with the late Cass Elliot, and previously published quotes from the group's recently deceased leader, John Phillips. The oral biography approach has pitfalls, as many of the quotes seem muddled without an author's narrative to provide background and context. Once the account reaches the group's breakup in 1968, important later events are given short shrift. For instance, it is unclear from the text exactly when Elliot died; only a caption from a funeral photo tells readers it was 1974. Later, an early Eighties reunion fronted by Doherty and John Phillips is ignored completely. Also annoying are a significant number of typographical errors in the proofs. Still, the lurid details of sudden fame, drug consumption, and an affair between Michelle and Doherty (leading to Michelle's firing and rehiring and Mama Cass's jealous wrath) make for fascinating reading. Recommended where there is demand for Sixties rock music titles, especially since the dueling autobiographies of John (Papa John) and Michelle Phillips (California Dreamin') are out of print. Excellent work!

It's fantastic! I have expected its release since I first learnt that it was gonna be written (approx. 2 years ago). It's been a long time but it was worth the wait. I've read Michelle's and John's biographies and even Hall Doug's California Dreamin' and I think that Greenwald's GO WHERE YOU WANNA GO is not just another book in the Mamas and the Papas' bibliography. You can always find something new throughout it that has not been mentioned in the other books. As the title says it's an oral history and it's told not only by Michelle, Cass, John, and Denny, but also by all those who directly or indirectly were part of their roller-coaster lives. The book has the power of making you feel that you were also part of that story since a single event, for instance, is told by three or four different people without necessarily overlapping but complementing each other. I recommend this book not only to any The Mamas and the Papas' fans but also to all those who are interested in the history of Rock and Roll of the late 60's.

BEST OVERVIEW OF MAMAS AND PAPAS EVER COMPILED!

I have read the reviews written here, and have to wholeheartedly disagree. This is a phenomenol account, and matthew greenwald did a superlative job. I am an AVID Mamas and Papas fan, and have read EVERTHING written about them. THIS IS THE BOOK TO READ if you want to get a complete picture of the players and the era. I learned so much from the people who were their friends and contemporaries. I have read "Papa John" by John Phillips and found it meandering and full of untruths. I have read "California Dreaming" by Michelle Phillips and found her writing to be childish and insipid. This is the book to get! You will learn SO much about this group and the flower power era than in any other publication.

The blatant errors in this book are shocking!

I am probably one of M & P's greatest fans and even I was shocked at how many typo's, complete paragraph errors, etc., that this book has. Hopefully in the second printing, (if there is going to be one) the mistakes will have been edited out. If they are, I am sure that the first edition printings will be a collector's item.

Saved Me!

This book saved me in more ways than one. I love my husband, but he has some major character flaws that are deeply rooted, anger being the chiefest among them. I'm a passive, quiet, peace-loving person who doesn't handle confrontation or high-stimulus very well. So when my husband started swearing and yelling quite soon after being married, I was shocked. We both come from a very religious background that encourages marriage and respect in relationships, but somehow he had missed that part. I didn't know what to do, quite honestly. Initially, I would cry. He accused me of trying top manipulate him somehow by crying! So I learned to not show any emotion. When I wasn't shocked and scared of him, I tried to talk things out. I never got as emotional as he did, because I didn't think every problem required such huge reactions when we could just go straight to the problem-solving and skip the "woe is me/us" part. So he thought I was apathetic if I didn't get as emotional or dramatic.

I won't get too specific, but to give you an idea of how irrational he gets when angry, he has threatened to leave our 3 year-old son at home while we go out because he didn't finish his dinner (don't worry, I was sane enough not to allow that!). He makes up the strangest punishments for our kids that just sound vengeful to me, childish, even, like something you would do to your kid-brother when you're 10, not something you would dish out to your child as their father. He yells at me when the house isn't perfectly clean, so I clean till it's shining, and he still yells! It makes no difference. He just overreacts when he's stressed out, regardless of how perfect I am or how hard I try to please him.

My husband is also very tender and sensitive to others' feelings. He has so many good qualities, I have never felt like I could give up on him in good conscience. Especially knowing that his problems were mostly learned from a difficult childhood and watching his father react to his trials incorrectly. We have young children, and I have a strong desire to be a good mother, so I'm always reading parenting books. I found myself wanting to parent my husband because of his immaturity! It works pretty good, actually, until you come to the really tough things that require more than just "positive reinforcement" when he's "behaving". Like what did I do when he finally threatened to physically hurt me (I knew that day would come eventually, and it did after 7 years of marriage)? I walked away, calmly. When he was calmed down (a few days later), I sat him down and rubbed his feet so I could look into his eyes. I told him that his anger didn't make him happy. That I couldn't be intimate with him, physically or emotionally, when he was angry and mean. I told him I loved him and was concerned about how much he was hurting himself by acting this way. After I made sure he felt loved and that I was on his side, I gently told him the "but": "...but I can't allow myself or the kids to be hurt by it anymore. I don't HAVE to stand there listening to you while you yell and scream at me. The kids don't have to either, and I won't make them or allow them to be subjected to it. I don't think you will stop yourself or leave when you're that angry because you do get irrational, so we will leave when I think it's escalating too much. It's not fair that we should have to leave when it's you that is out of control, so I will do what I need to do to make myself and the kids comfortable until you've had time to cool off. If that means spending money on a movie or the zoo or dinner, etc. (he is very tight-fisted with money, but I did not say this to be vengeful!), we will do that."

I realized through reading this book that I was allowing him to be immature, and I was contributing to him not taking responsibility for his emotional outbursts! It is never the vistim's fault, don't get me wrong, but if I am enabling my spouse to strengthen a flaw, I want to know so I can fix whatever character flaw of mine that is contributing to it! And my flaw is my passivity. I always just wanted the yelling to be over, so I would be as gentle and soft as I could and give him whatever he wanted (like a 2 yr old) so he would stop his adult temper tantrums. Right before I read this book, I had started really caving to him. After EVERY fight, I was the one who initiated the problem-solving (even though he was the initiator when we first got married!). Each time I sat him down to talk about the problem, he would only talk about what I did wrong. Eventually I got tired of trying to get him top see my way, so I just said sorry for every little thing I could think of, not matter how miniscule, just to have peace in our home again! I hated doing it, and I knew it was wrong for me to give in when I knew I was in the right, but I didn't know how to place consequences on him for his immaturity, and didn't know if it was Christian for me to do it.

This book was the answer!!! It helped me to have the guts to place my boundaries. No one should be treated the way I was, or the way my kids were. I have the power to stand up for myself and my standards, even if it means against my dear husband.

You may think that my husband has bucked against this "new me", but he hasn't. Of course, at first it was a shock to him and I decided I needed to go slow and not stand up for myself too strongly to begin, but as time has gone on, he is realizing that there will be consequences for him mistreating us. My husband respects me more now than ever. I see where my passivity and shyness has made me shrug some of my own responsibilities that make things more stressful for him, too. For example, I put off important phone calls (dentist, bills, etc.) because I am shy on the phone and haven't learned to assert myself. It will be a long road for me to change that about myself, but I see now that it is necessary. My husband has respected me more as I change because I too am becoming more responsible and not impinging on someone else's boundaries.

I'm just SO grateful for this book. It could have gotten so much worse. If my husband had started abusing us physically, I would have HAD to leave with the kids to keep us all safe, and that is such a heavy, sorrowful step for anyone to have to take when there really is love in a marriage. We have worked hard in our marriage and created a bond that was compromised with every tantrum. Now that he knows there are consequences, he tries harder! No amount of nagging, begging, pleading, criticizing would change him, but consequences are.

A word about consequences for this type of situation: I try to make them as natural as possible, just as you should with children. I can't force my husband to go into time-out or give him extra chores each time he screams at us, and it wouldn't make sense anyway. If a stranger on the street started yelling at you, you wuoldn't just stand there and listen, right? There is no law that keeps you rooted to your spot so you have to listen to someone yelling, screaming, insulting you. So I don't either. And when he was angry with us before a family trip, I told him I would not go with him if he was angry and be subjected to his stressful grouchiness the whole time. When he didn't shape up, I called our friends that we were planning on visiting and told them I wouldn't be there with the kids and that I wasn't sure if hy husband would be, but he would contact them. I was still respectful to my husband's ego and just made an excuse that the kids were sick (one actually did have the beginnings of a cold). He soon apologized and was visibly disappointed in himself, not me. He knew the consequence I gave was right, so he took it more gracefully than he would have if it was arbitrary or vindictive or not done out of 100% love for him and the kids. I am one determined woman, and my marriage WILL NOT fail if I can help it! I am also determined to do it the Christlike way, the only way that will truly work. I truly believe marriage is a divine institution, and that the Lord will give us every aid we need to succeed in it if we are willing to work hard and place our trust and faith in Him.

These authors will never know the full impact of their work. I am a daily scripture reader, and I was still having a hard time gleaning what I needed to know, maybe because I was starting to get so stressed out with the situation that I couldn't think clearly to gain the needed revelation. I couldn't even get anything out of Boundaries because I was so distraught, so I had to go straight to Boundaries in Marriage. I finally prayed one more time for help. I have never felt so humble in my life. I told the Lord I had done everything I could and that I knew the only thing that could save me and our marriage was His grace. That's when this book found its way into my heart. Thank you SO much!

Great book!!!

I really enjoyed this book. I highly recommend it to anyone who is contemplating marriage or even couples who are married and who are having issues with disagreements on things. It really illustrates how to deal with a partner who oversteps boundaries and who may or may not realize how it negatively affects you. It helps you choose how you can deal with it from within...not by controlling them, but by setting boundaries for yourself as a protection and letting them choose how to handle themselves going forward. It makes sense that if your partner cares about you and the relationship, they will modify their behavior and if they choose not to, then they will have to deal with the consequences if they continue to violate your boundaries. Like I said, it is a great book to check out if you are thinking of getting married because it illustrates a lot of examples of situations that may arise and how people dealt with them so that all parties are happy. Plus, it opens the door for discussions between you and your partner to things you will and will not tolerate if you choose to get married...that way you can see what you are getting yourself into before you make that leap.

I have found this workbook very clunky to work with in comparison to other 'couples workbooks' I have had. I think it was just the lack of guidance on when to actually work through the workbook when you are listening to the audiobook or reading. It would be nice if the book specifically placed in stops/pauses in the book to guide the readers as they would suggest it be followed.

Hawaiiana yes, Tiki no!

You gotta be kidding me? Any Tiki fan would find this book worthless. It does include some nice history of Hawaii especially in reference to Tiki but that is where it abruptly ends.
The fluffy Tiki Of America chapter contains tacky clip art images, images copied from Sven Kirsten's Book of Tiki, and fairly common non-Tiki imagery. The writing throughout is very weak and sounds like a string of headlines/jargon rather than independently researched information. The Don the Beachcomber info seems informative, unless you already own Scrounging the Islands with the Legendary Don the Beachcomber.
The book is barely saved by the last segment, Tiki Of Today, which attempts to tie the current Tiki trend into modern day Waikiki.

Hawaiian tikis explained

If you have ever seen a Hawaiian tiki and wondered about what it meant then you need to add this book to your library. There is information about Hawaiian history in here along with the definitions of beliefs from the tiki's. If you are planning a trip or just want to gain some background information this is a great book and easy to read.

Fun -- Authentic

This little book is a great read -- the first chapter is an accurate history of Tikis in Hawaiian History. Schweitzer then proceeds to trace the use of this symbol by pop culture, bars, restaurants, singers, on the mainland and in the islands. Excellent writing, superb graphics.
