May I have a couple more stars please!?

I have been procrastinating somewhat with writing this review, because I doubt I can do this book the justice it deserves.
Firstly it needs to be rated at higher than five stars as it has an intangible quality that places it above all the other five star books that I've been lucky enough to read lately.
I think it's mainly due to the immediacy and tension embodied in the military action scenes, especially the ones at the beginning of the book. The hair on the back of my neck stood up, I had goosebumps and my heart was palpitating. I've obviously never been in the military, never been in a firefight, nor after reading this all too realistic telling of it would I ever wish to be.
It was small relief to then encounter the time travel component. Now these incredibly real characters find themselves in the land of the Norse some thousand years ago - don't refer to them as Vikings, they get rather cranky at that misnomer. And we find ourselves introduced to a whole new group of pretty awesome characters. All of which leads to some amazing adventures and a most terrific read.
This is one you really do not want to miss reading if you enjoy military action mixed with time travel and sprinkled liberally with some heartwarming characters. Evil persons excepted of course!

First read from McArdle, I enjoyed the plot and for the first time in 50 + years I had to look up the meaning of words. I blame it on the language barrier. Good Job Keith.

a broad, introductory framework for the subject and very tactical

All else being equal, people would rather spend time with, work with, buy from, and help those that they like. The skill of being likeable and helping people to like you is thus a very useful life skill and can be an important component of your success toolbox.

Boothman establishes two beautiful aspects to being likeable:

1. It's a learned skill. This means that no matter who you are and where you're starting from, you can improve and develop your skills so that others like you more and more quickly.

2. It's an honest and ethical practice. Even though the title has the typical "self-help schmarminess," there is nothing tricky or conniving about the tools and tactics in the book. You would want everyone in your life to understand the concepts of this book and to practice them continually in their relationship with you. Ultimately, likeability largely boils down to active listening and we all crave friends who are careful, active listeners.

This book is not deep. Boothman doesn't dig into science research or discuss a lot of history. Rather, it's useful and practical. You can immediately learn and apply the content. I appreciate that!

I listened to the audiobook version and I enjoyed listening to it in the author's own voice. He does an excellent job conveying the emotion and tone of his work.

However, I purchased the written version so that I would be able to access the outline and notes for reference and so that I could do some of the exercises contained within it.

The book was published in 2000, so there are plenty of used copies available for $0.01. Also, the Kindle version is a downright bargain at $2.51!

Like getting coaching from your most charismatic friend

Of course this book won't teach you how to MAKE people like you in 90 seconds or less. That would require magical powers. No book can deliver what the book's title promises. That said, Boothman offers some great tips on how to make a connection with people instantly. It's like being able to sit down with a very charismatic friend and have them teach you their tricks.

A few of Boothman's tips feel gimmicky to me. For instance, he puts a lot of stock in each person relying on one sense more than the others, whether sight, hearing, or touch. While he makes it seems like it is the easiest thing in the world to figure out which sense someone prefers, my experience was that it is not so easy to figure out which someone is in real life. I wish there had been more research to back this claim, especially since he spends a fair amount of the book discussing this concept.

After finishing the book I felt like about a third of the book offered really terrific tips. Another third offered mediocre tips. The last third offered tips that didn't seem to work for me. Still, in my mind, the third of the book that offers terrific tips makes the book worth the read. Plus, Boothman is a fun author. I never found myself getting bored, even in the places where I disagreed.

Journalist Gabor tells the story of Deming, an American statistician and quality control expert who was invited by the Japanese to help them develop industry in the 1950s. Since then, Deming's principles--many the elements of the much-touted "Japanese management style"--have belatedly influenced American companies such as Ford, General Motors, and Xerox. Deming's view of quality is significantly different from that of Philip Crosby ( Let's Talk Quality , LJ 4/1/89 and Quality Without Tears , LJ 4/1/84), who stresses hard work and allowing zero defects, and Russell Wright ( A Little Bit at a Time , LJ 8/90), who looks to individuals to improve quality. Deming believes only by understanding and eliminating variation from work processes will managers have the knowledge they need to eliminate deep-rooted systemic problems. Given Deming's influence and reputation, this is a must for all business collections. Changing Mindset

I read the local library's copy and its so good I am going to buy one for myself.
Why? Because Andrea Gabor has researched the topic of Quality well. More to the point, Andrea has given insight to the men who showed how to achieve continual improvement (Quality).
Its more than a good read, there are valuable lessons to be learnt from reading case histories mentioned. Note how successful companies can become!
Reading "The Man Who Discovered Quality" will encourage you to change your attitude towards work. Directors and managers should especially read this insightful reseach, because its within your hands to change business mindset.
You may even want to extend the attitude of Quality into your personal life.
Read it and make up your own mind.

It will make you think.

There are a number of books on Edward Deming and the quest for quality. I am familiar with this one only, but I found it a very good introduction to quality control. The author shows how a quest for quality can be applied to almost any field of endeavor. With an effort to improve quality Florida Light & Power was able to reduce greatly the number of power outages on its lines. You will find yourself looking at what you do and asking how you can improve. You will also find yourself taking notice of businesses that have a long way to go in achieving quality.

Andrea was a speaker at ourlocal American Society for Quality section and she did a great job of discussing Dr. Deming. We passed out the bood as a 'door prize'. Book is helpful in understanding Deming.

Good textbook and learning tool

This book is required reading for my graduate studies. Normally subjects like ethics can be extremely dry and boring. This book is not. There are relevant case studies that really help the reader grasp the various scenarios they may find themselves in. The "technical" content is engaging, not dry at all.

It will help to create a great initial foundation about the field and it will also give you great insight and step by step instructions on how to become members of important counseling associations. I appreciate the book for my class. It adds to it.

The Spiritual Path of Surat Shabd

"The Philosophy of the Masters" is a compelling book which was written by a realized Master, Sawan Singh. The book describes the spiritual practice of Surat Shabd of Sant Mat which is purported to be the highest spiritual science. The focus of this spiritual practice is to attune oneself to the spiritual current of the sound and light of "God" which is Shabd, or the outward manifestation of "God". It should be noted that the practice of Surat Shabd can only be accomplished through one's initiation and direction of a Living Master or Teacher. This is the rub. One cannot practice Surat Shabd based on one's own faith by worshiping a non-living Master or Religious Icon. Where and how one finds a Living Master seems to be a near impossible task and a real frustration let alone if one is spiritually ready for such a Master. How does one really know that a particular Master is the embodiment of "God" or if one is being led in the wrong direction?
Although this is a very provocative and compelling book which raises very cogent points about the practice of Surat Shabd, it would appear not to be the most practical spiritual path to pursue.

(BTW, if you've read Christopher McDougall's engrossing book BORN TO RUN, you're already aware of chia's powerful reputation among distance runners.) Allen discusses the specific health benefits, covers the latest research studies, and gives many practical tips on painlessly integrating chia into your diet so you can enjoy its health benefits. This short title (40 pages) seems like the perfect amount of information for those looking to understand how and why chia works, and how to use it. (It even includes a handful of chia recipes.) At just $4.95, this little booklet was worth every penny. Highly recommended.
