From the Inside Flap

Behavioral finance applies systematic analysis to ideas that have long existed in the world of trading and investing. However, it is important to realize that we are still at a very early stage of research into this discipline and have much to learn. In Behavioral Finance: Understanding the Social, Cognitive, and Economic Debates, Edwin Burton and Sunit Shah put behavioral finance under the microscope to help you gain a better understanding of the various aspects of this subset of behavioral economics.

Engaging and informative, this timely guide contains valuable insights into various issues surrounding behavioral finance. Burton and Shah examine the psychological research pioneered by Kahneman and Tversky—including anomalies such as consumer choice with certainity and uncertainity, perception biases, and reading into randomness—that underlies behavior in financial markets. They discuss the Efficient Market Hypothesis (EMH), summarize its history, and present the background of the emergence of behavioral finance. The book also explores the key components of Shleifer's model of noise trading and explains the importance of this model in the larger context of behavioral finance. Burton and Shah include essential information on noise traders and the law of one price as well as the case of fungibility. The book also contains an exploration of noise trading feedback models such as the Hirshleifer model.

Further, Behavioral Finance reviews serial correlation patterns in stock price data from the perspective of experts such as DeBondt and Thaler. The book puts the Capital Asset Pricing Model to the test and reveals why Fama-French is a milestone for behavioral finance. Along the way, Burton and Shah share their own views on this important area of finance and shed some much needed light on the subject.

From the Back Cover

Historically, economics has assumed that financial markets are efficient, or that an asset's market price at any given point in time reflects its underlying value. However, there now exists a considerable accumulation of evidence that supports the behavioral finance point of view that this need not be the case. Divided into five comprehensive parts, Behavioral Finance offers investors an in-depth guide to the evolving science of behavioral finance. Written by Edwin Burton and Sunit Shah—economics experts with experience in both academia and the financial marketplace—this reliable resource illuminates the wide variety of issues that comprise behavioral finance.

The book explores the Efficient Market Hypothesis, highlights noise trader theory and models including the noted Shleifer model, examines research into psychological behavior pioneered by Daniel Kahneman and Amos Tversky, and offers an examination of serial correlation patterns in stock price data.

To achieve better investment results, we must first overcome our behavioral biases. This book will put you in a better position to do so.

Nice book
By Dimitri Shvorob
The book is overpriced for its 200+ small pages, and undercooked - see the easy-to-spot things like the clearly unnecessary model detail on p. 57, or the at-first-glance-technical discussion of DeLong et al. (1990) failing to explain the model's workings - but it is a good book, far superior to Wiley's earlier offering, Montier's low-quality, heavily padded "Behavioral investing". "Psychology" (think Kahneman and Tversky) takes up about 90 pages, and "finance" gets 130, devoting most space to empirical tests of "value" and momentum/reversal effects. The latter focus contributes to a feeling that the book gives only a partial view of the field, but, again, it's much better than the alternative.

It was Vacillation
By William L. Griffith
I found the author a bit wishy'washy as if he feared alienating his peers. First he presented arguments negating the efficient market hypothesis and then he later defended it and gave poor reasoning for his vacillation. All I know is that only a fool believes he can outperform the index stocks on any consistent basis.

Wed and bed one of his biggest client's unsavory daughters? No thanks. But the only way millionaire Travis King could get the man off his back was to marry someone else. So he handpicked his temporary and on-his-terms bride— hometown girl Julie O'Hara. The woman was desperate and should easily fade into the background. And, as per their contract, she'd do exactly what he wanted during their year of platonic marriage. Unless what he wanted began to change.…

Engagingly written but I had some problems with the characters
By booksforabuck
He can see the pressure coming already. His distributor has multiple ugly daughters and Travis King is a highly eligible bachelor. But Travis spots a way out--if he's already married, already has a wife, the pressure is off. With childhood friend Julie O'Hara handy, why not arrange a quick marriage of convenience, with the understanding that she'll go away in a year once the distribution agreement is done. Travis can certainly afford the money to pay her off. What he can't afford is a wife he doesn't love.

Julie O'Hara has learned the lessons of love. Her first husband dumped her and she's struggling to save enough to pursue her dream--opening a bakery. Travis promises enough money to make that easy, and he's not demanding sex--not that sex with Travis would be any hardship. Still, something about the whole deal feels wrong. When push comes to shove, though, Julie will do whatever she can for Travis--she's always had a soft spot in her heart for him. But when it turns out her first marriage was never officially divorced and her ex-husband/first husband starts blackmailing her second, a marriage of convenience based on friendship and shared needs looks likely to blow up.

Author Maureen Child brings sensual detail, the marriage of convenience fantasy, a super-wealthy hero, and capable writing to a couple of characters who just didn't work for me. Travis's motivation for seeking the marriage of convenience seemed weak--how about just saying no? Julie's motivation for agreeing was even weaker. But the real problem comes when the evil Frenchman (and first husband) Jean Claude Douchette starts his blackmail program. As Travis recognizes, Julie is already scheduled to do very well out of a short term marriage of convenience. Her motivation to bring in Jean Claude seems impossible. Moreover, once the news of Julie's bigamy comes out, Jean Claude's blackmail opportunities vanish--but Travis continues to hold suspicious thoughts toward Julie. Even harder to swallow is Julie's decision to meet with Jean Claude. Considering all she had to say was 'don't blackmail us any more,' and considering that she already knows photographers are following her, meeting up with Jean Claude seems to fall into the too-stupid-to-live classification.

Maureen Child puts down some pretty good prose. It's a shame these characters don't really live up to it.

I didn't hate or love this book. Travis was so paranoid and Julie was so naive. The book focused on Travis mistrusting Julie and assuming she was out to get him. I just wanted to say, "give it a rest, Travis. Enough already."

Capitalism: Competition, Conflict, Crises, by Anwar Shaikh

Orthodox economics operates within a hypothesized world of perfect competition in which perfect consumers and firms act to bring about supposedly optimal outcomes. The discrepancies between this model and the reality it claims to address are then attributed to particular imperfections in reality itself. Most heterodox economists seize on this fact and insist that the world is characterized by imperfect competition. But this only ties them to the notion of perfect competition, which remains as their point of departure and base of comparison. There is no imperfection without perfection.

In Capitalism, Anwar Shaikh takes a different approach. He demonstrates that most of the central propositions of economic analysis can be derived without any reference to standard devices such as hyperrationality, optimization, perfect competition, perfect information, representative agents, or so-called rational expectations. This perspective allows him to look afresh at virtually all the elements of economic analysis: the laws of demand and supply, the determination of wage and profit rates, technological change, relative prices, interest rates, bond and equity prices, exchange rates, terms and balance of trade, growth, unemployment, inflation, and long booms culminating in recurrent general crises.

In every case, Shaikh's innovative theory is applied to modern empirical patterns and contrasted with neoclassical, Keynesian, and Post-Keynesian approaches to the same issues. Shaikh's object of analysis is the economics of capitalism, and he explores the subject in this expansive light. This is how the classical economists, as well as Keynes and Kalecki, approached the issue. Anyone interested in capitalism and economics in general can gain a wealth of knowledge from this ground-breaking text.

Review

"An excellent lexicon of the long-term genesis, content, and journey of capitalism... provides readers with one-stop shopping -- an excellent repository of everything anyone would desire to know to be more informed about this formidable social institution."

-- Choice

"[Capitalism] is different, it's not political, it's written for economics scholars and explores the fundamental categories on which neoclassical economics is built, that is; 'rational' consumers, U-shaped supply curves, flat demand functions and the fiction of an equilibrium at which marginal-utility equals marginal-cost. The author's scalpel eviscerates every one of these categories from the inside that is from within economic discourse and using empirical economic data. This book will resonate for a long time."

-- Kumar David, Colombo Telegraph

"Anwar Shaikh has always been an independent, free spirit. He has great economic intuition and technical skills. He has absorbed the literature of classical political economy, Marx's writings, modern economic theory, and applied work. He also is well versed in philosophy and in historical writings. His mentors include Smith, Ricardo, Marx, Keynes, Sraffa, Joan Robinson, Kalecki, Goodwin, Godley, Pasinetti and Taylor. All these influences and more come together in Capitalism: Competition, Conflict, Crises, his magnum opus.

In an extraordinary blend of original theory and careful empirical work, we have possibly the most comprehensive structure since Marx's Capital, within which to understand and analyse the many inter-related processes that constitute modern advanced capitalism. His book provides both deep understanding, and a platform on which to erect appropriate policies, with which to tackle the revealed malfunctionings and undesirable social outcomes. It would not be Shaikh's fault if others do not take up the challenge."

-- G. C. Harcourt, Reader in the History of Economic Theory, Emeritus, University of Cambridge and Visiting Professorial Fellow, School of Economics, UNSW Australia

"Anwar Shaikh's magnum opus is one of the most important works of political economy to have come out in a generation. In a time when economics is becoming ever more recondite and otherworldly, Shaikh shows that an economic theory based on real abstractions is not only necessary, but also possible. This is a work of lasting importance, not just for economists, but for anyone interested in how capitalism works."

-- Vivek Chibber, Professor of Sociology, New York University

"An amazing feat. Anwar Shaikh's Capitalism covers exchange, production, costs, competition, money, macro-dynamics, profit, wages and trade, with theory, history and evidence complete. Deeply erudite and beautifully written, it is at once a stunning renovation of classical and Keynesian economics and a relentless demolition of sophistries. A book to savor and to teach; there hasn't one like it for 150 years."

-- James K. Galbraith, author of The End of Normal and of Inequality: What Everyone Needs to Know

"This new book by Anwar Shaikh is a veritable tour de force from a unique economist who skillfully links deep insights from classical economic theory with cutting edge ideas in econophysics and economic complexity to penetratingly deal with issues from microeconomic competition through macroeconomic dynamics and turbulence."

-- J. Barkley Rosser, Jr., Professor of Economics and Kirby L. Cramer, Jr. Professor of Business Administration, James Madison University

By Amazon Customer
Anwar Shaikh's long awaited magnum opus, Capitalism: Competition, Conflict, Crises, is finally out. The object of investigation is real advanced capitalism rather than an idealized free market economy. The theoretical scope goes unswervingly beyond the boundaries of the mainstream. Capitalism is a book of general theory and a devastating challenge to the underlying “vision” of compartmentalized orthodox economics based on perfect competition and rational choice. At the same time, it is sensitive to the applicability of the theory at hand; hence, every fundamental argument is tested against empirical evidence. This will be a long-lasting book that should be required reading in every graduate program in economics. No one interested in knowing how really existing capitalism functions can afford not to read it.

By Susan Schroeder, University of Sydney
This book is a must-have for anyone looking for fresh view of how to analyze a capitalist market economy. It methodically analyzes not only particular sectors from the perspective of the classical political economists, such as Smith and Ricardo, but it provides a way of integrating the sectoral analyses into a unified whole - something that mainstream economics struggles to do. Moreover, the book provides empirical evidence to support the arguments made. This book, in my opinion, is the next "General Theory". Mainstream economists will need to confront this book if their apologetic agenda is to remain in place. If you are interested in policy recommendations that are grounded in this style of analysis, please see Public Credit Rating Agencies: Increasing Capital Investment and Lending Stability in Volatile Markets

Masterful blend of theory, history, and statistical evidence
By Hans G. Despain
Shaikh’s book Capitalism is an extraordinary accomplishment, demonstrating a lifetime of thought and engagement with economic theory. The book will quickly become an important reference for economists.

A friend suggested that Capitalism might very well become the next economic book, following Thomas Piketty’s Capital, to become a best-seller sensation from an academic press. I doubt it. Shaikh’s book is too esoterically based on economic theory to hit the same cord that Piketty’s policy driven book hit with a general audience. Of course this is not a criticism of Shaikh but an observation of the content.

The structure of the book is framed around neo-classical/neo-post-Keynesian economic theory. Shaikh masterfully develops penetrating critiques of economic theory. In the end it can be argued that Shaikh has sketched an alternative position to the problems and dilemmas in economic theory.

If the framing of the argument is a critique of neo-classical/neo-post-Keynesian theoretical positions, the alternative theoretical sketch promiscuously draws from a variety of theoretical insights, but is rooted unambiguously and unapologetically in the Classical tradition of Steuart, Smith, Ricardo, and Marx. Shaikh calls the basic structural historical tendencies of capitalism “turbulent regulation.” These are the ‘law-like’ tendencies and historical recurrences of the system. Thus, Shaikh is able to develop turbulent regulatory theories of profits, wages, prices, interest rates, income distribution, growth, technological change, employment patterns, crisis, etc.

Although, many economists will take issue with much of Shaikh’s argument, the enduring contribution will surely be his well-argued and historical evidence of the structural tendencies or “turbulent regulation” of capitalism as a system.

His notion of “real competition” (in distinction of perfect and imperfect competition) is also a quite important return to the Classical tradition in the context of current theoretical insights. Real competition is a rather subtle theoretical amendment from the notion of imperfect competition, with massive implications for the macro-dynamic regulation of the capitalist system.

In chapter 13 Shaikh develops a theory of macro dynamics based on the methodological and theoretical insights of Classical political economy. This Classical macro dynamic functions as a type of micro-foundation for neo-Marxian/post-Keynesian theories of unemployment, wages, income distribution, money, interest rates, and crisis tendencies of capitalism.

Shaikh develops a general theory of crisis. Nonetheless, Shaikh insists that “growth” is the normal state of capitalism. He defends a theory of “long-waves.” I am not convinced by this, and would like to give the book a second reading to evaluate his provocative insights on these issues. Many political economists believe that the stagnation tendencies of capitalism are thick, and without financialization shenanigans the stagnation tendencies of developed capitalism would be far more empirically clear. Nevertheless, I very much appreciate Shaikh’s insights on growth, crisis, and long-waves.

Three glaring weaknesses of the book are: (1) Shaikh fails to sufficiently explain the role of state in a crisis-ridden system of capitalism. In this sense, there is a tendency in this book toward being overly economistic, i.e. the turbulent structural regulation is overly deterministic. The state and other institutional forms (e.g. central bank, oligopolies, industrial centralization, etc.) can adjust the “gravitational pull” (Shaikh’s terminology) of historical development, income distribution, and prices adjustments. Thus, far more attention needs to be given to policy and institutional change. Likewise, (2) Shaikh fails to develop the cultural implications, including modes of advertizing, social communication, relationships (marriage, child-care, etc.), cultural conflict, the relationship between economic power and political influence, etc. Finally, (3) the axiological implications of Shaikh’s position are massive; yet he does not adequately address issues of social justice, ethics, and other normative issues which were central to the Classical political economists. We can appreciate that these issues may take Shaikh too far a field from his central interest, after all the book is almost 800 pages of text, and over 1000 pages with appendices and index. It is a reasonable to argue that Shaikh has provided the turbulent regulatory theoretical framework to understand capitalism, and other theorists can develop the political, cultural, and philosophical implications, on the basis of Shaikh’s work. Nonetheless, the absence of additional appendices on imporant political, cultural, and philosophical implications is a weakness. The “turbulent regulation” of capitalism is radically intertwined and integrated with the political, cultural, and philosophical. Capitalist principles come to have a dominance as a turbulent regulatory mechanism inside the economy and also beyound the economic in other spheres of social being.

In spite of its weaknesses, Shaikh's book is an impressive accomplishment and a massive masterful contribution to both economic theory and our understanding of capitalism and it's contradictory development.

Although Shaikh’s book won’t sell as well as Piketty’s political and policy driven book, Shaikh’s book is a far more accomplished theoretical achievement and deserves a wide audience and serious consideration.

very good guide to Master Scheduling processes
By Alexey Cheslavsky
To say with simple words about such a complicated thing like Master Scheduling is an approach I liked so much. And I liked more that the book is not only about MPS tools but a part of it is about implementation of Master Scheduling. I recommend it to the persons who work in Order Fulfillment at demand or supply side or who are interested in SCM or who are going to be Master Scheduler.

Effective Book Explaining Concepts That ARe Often Misunderstood
By Shaun Snapp
As a consultant and working in different environments, I have found that one of the biggest challenges on projects is getting a shared understanding on terminology. S&OP, MPS, and master scheduling all seem to be interpreted as different things by different people. This book's biggest strength is that it explains both how master scheduling is different from master production scheduling, and also how master scheduling fits into S&OP. For that alone it is a worthwhile read.

The Red Umbrella, by Christina Gonzalez

The Red Umbrella is a moving tale of a 14-year-old girl's journey from Cuba to America as part of Operation Pedro Pan—an organized exodus of more than 14,000 unaccompanied children, whose parents sent them away to escape Fidel Castro's revolution.

In 1961, two years after the Communist revolution, Luca lvarez still leads a carefree life, dreaming of parties and her first crush. But when the soldiers come to her sleepy Cuban town, everything begins to change. Freedoms are stripped away. Neighbors disappear. And soon, Luca's parents make the heart-wrenching decision to send her and her little brother to the United States—on their own.

Suddenly plunked down in Nebraska with well-meaning strangers, Luca struggles to adapt to a new country, a new language, a new way of life. But what of her old life? Will she ever see her home or her parents again? And if she does, will she still be the same girl?

The Red Umbrella is a touching story of country, culture, family, and the true meaning of home.

“Captures the fervor, uncertainty and fear of the times. . . . Compelling.” –The Washington Post

“Gonzalez deals effectively with separation, culture shock, homesickness, uncertainty and identity as she captures what is also a grand adventure.” –San Francisco Chronicle

From School Library Journal
Grade 6–9—Fourteen-year-old Lucía lives an easy middle-class life in 1961 Cuba, thinking only about clothes, boys, and dances. When Communist revolutionaries occupy her town, an escalating witch hunt against capitalists compels her parents to send her and her brother to the U.S. under the care of the Catholic Welfare Bureau (as part of "Operation Pedro Pan," which—the endnotes explain—was the largest-ever exodus of unaccompanied children in the West). Lucía eventually settles with a foster family in Nebraska, where she comes to terms with her duel identity as a Cuban exile and an American teen. She must also piece together a picture of what's happening to her parents and friends at home from interrupted phone calls, censored letters, and newspaper articles. This well-written novel has a thoroughly believable protagonist and well-chosen period details. It should be noted, however, that Gonzalez portrays the single sympathetic Communist character as increasingly brainwashed. Few readers will recognize the polemics driving this convincing story, but as an introduction to the history and politics of the Cuban-exile community, it could generate some excellent classroom discussions.—Rhona Campbell, Washington, DC Public Library

From Booklist
When Castro comes to power, teenage Luca wants nothing to do with the revolution; she is more worried about what to wear to the school dance. Then she witnesses the horrifying public hanging of her father’s boss, and her parents send her and her little brother, Frank, to safety in the U.S., where a church places them with a kind foster home in Nebraska. Based on the author’s parents’ story, Gonzalez’s first novel captures the heart-wrenching, personal drama of family separation. At the start of each chapter, a brief newspaper headline gives a glimpse into Cuban politics and history, but the core of Luca’s first-person narrative is her emotional upheaval as she cares for Frank and tries to fit into her eighth-grade class, where everything is strange and different. The characters, including the loving, imperfect adults, are authentic, and teens will recognize Luca’s rebellious moments, which sometimes get ugly, as well as her anguish over costly long-distance calls “home” and her hope for reunion with her family. A wonderful book.
By M. Medrano
I do not read fiction.
I read this book because it's about a moment in history of which I was a part of.
I was a "Pedro Pan" child.
I was fortunate enough to have my aunt, uncle and two cousins waiting for me at Miami International Airport the night I arrived from Cuba in 1961. I was seven years old. My mother and twelve year-old sister arrived the next day. We were very lucky to all have been reunited after one day. Many children weren't. Some never saw their parents again.
This easy reading, fictional true to life story taking place after Fidel Castro's revolution in 1959 is very well written. You get to know and love the characters and how the revolution gripped the country and changed their lives, for the worst. Their problems are real, just as they were when my mother was deciding whether she should send me out of Cuba, not knowing if she would see me again and then leaving her home, family and literally her life behind in a span of two days (not knowing if the "underground" plans would change at the last minute).
I have to admit I cried while reading this book because it brought back memories of small events and things I had completely forgotten about (example, my family in Miami waiting for hours or days to get a telephone connection to Cuba) that came back to me. Schoolmates that wore Cuban revolutionary clothes, in the PRIVATE school I attended (CIMA).
At one point I wanted to get one of those outfits. I thought it was "cool". My mother was adamantly opposed to it. I was upset, but now I understand. No different from a child wanting a Hitler Youth outfit in 1940s Germany if the parents opposed the Third Reich.
Beautifully written, this book should be welcomed at any public or private school library. Nothing objectionable, excellent fun and educational reading for both girls, boys and adults.
The "red" umbrella is very meaningful in this story. You too will cry.
I highly recommended it.
I'm looking forward to Christina's next book.

History with Heart
By Whatcha Reading Now?
Lucia Alvarez wants what any fourteen year old girl wants--
to spend time talking about boys with her best friend Ivette, to go to the movies and dances, and to avoid babysitting her annoying younger brother Frankie. It's just that her parents are so old-fashioned. Can't they see Lucia is old enough for a little independence?

When soldiers from Castro's Revolution arrive in Lucia's small town, her life becomes more oppressive, not less. Freedoms and friends disappear overnight. Finally her parents make the heart-wrenching decision to send Frankie and Lucia to the U.S. Alone.

The Red Umbrella, set in Cuba during 1961, by debut author Christina Gonzalez brings a culture and its past to life with this story of two children who were part of Operation Pedro Pan. It is, in fact, a personal family story for Ms. Gonzalez as both of her parents were part of the exodus of 14,000 unaccompanied minors who were sent to the U.S. in the early 60's to escape Castro's regime. The story of Lucia and Frankie Alvarez is a part of history that's generally not well known. The Red Umbrella deals with their upheaval with warmth, pathos and sometimes heart-breaking sadness.

The Castro Takeover Through the Eyes of a Teenage Girl
By S. Su
14-year-old Lucia Alvarez's life is turned upside down when Fidel Castro takes power in Cuba in 1960. Suddenly her best friend is a propaganda-spewing stranger, soldiers brutally kill her father's business acquaintances, and her parents are being closely watched. Lucia just wants to be an average teenage girl, hanging out with her friends, keeping up with the latest American fashions, and maybe even getting closer to her crush, but that can no longer be.

Then Lucia and her younger brother, Frankie, receive visas to go live with a temporary foster family in Nebraska. The culture shock is great and frightening; can Lucia manage a new language and culture, growing into a young lady in the meantime, when the fate of her parents and her beloved Cuba are so uncertain?

I have never read a novel like Christina Gonzalez's debut, THE RED UMBRELLA. This is a necessary story about an aspect of Cuban American history that has not received enough attention in YA literature--and best of all, it's extremely well written and engaging!

Gonzalez writes convincingly of all her characters. Lucia is partly your average teenager, desiring friendship, love, acceptance, and pretty things. Her parents are a believable blend of loving, strict, and worried, and Frankie is a cute and appropriately occasionally annoying younger brother. The way the story follows Lucia through this difficult time in her life, however, is a miraculous achievement: my heart ached as I read about the difficulties she faced, and I saw a distinct, yet subtle, growth in her as she realizes the extent to which Castro's takeover would affect her life.

The pacing and plot were a little uneven, though, and thus not as fulfilling as it could've been. The first two-thirds of the book takes place within a few fast and furious months in Cuba, as the revolution starts taking over Cubans' lives. This part of the book is great, as we see Lucia and her family struggling to remain true to themselves in the face of so much propaganda and pressure. However, when Lucia and Frankie spend time with the elderly white couple in Nebraska while they await news of their parents, time sees to stop and go in choppy bits, covering more than half a year in just a few dozen pages. As a result, I felt that Lucia's adjustment to American life and subsequent maturation were rushed, and that the characters in this section of the book were underdeveloped.

Pacing aside, this was a fantastic read, great for everyone. The Alvarezes are a family to cheer for throughout the whole story. Never before have I seen this aspect of Cuban American history discussed in such an approachable and sympathetic manner. I am thankful for this book, hope others will strongly consider reading it when it comes out, and definitely look forward to anything Christina has next for us!

There is a high demand for antimicrobials for the treatment of new and emerging microbial diseases. In particular, microbes developing multidrug resistance have created a pressing need to search for a new generation of antimicrobial agents, which are effective, safe and can be used for the cure of multidrug-resistant microbial infections. Nano-antimicrobials offer effective solutions for these challenges; the details of these new technologies are presented here.

The book includes chapters by an international team of experts. Chemical, physical, electrochemical, photochemical and mechanical methods of synthesis are covered. Moreover, biological synthesis using microbes, an option that is both eco-friendly and economically viable, is presented. The antimicrobial potential of different nanoparticles is also covered, bioactivity mechanisms are elaborated on, and several applications are reviewed in separate sections. Midnight In the Garden of Good and Evil, by John Berendt

The best non-fiction novel since "In Cold Blood" is a true story of intrigue, murder, forgery and eccentricity set in the steamy, surreal atmosphere of Savannah, Georgia. The unpredictable twists and turns of a murder case are skilfully interwoven with a hugely entertaining first-person account of life in this isolated remnant of the Old South.

Amazon.com Review
John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil has been heralded as a "lyrical work of nonfiction," and the book's extremely graceful prose depictions of some of Savannah, Georgia's most colorful eccentrics--remarkable characters who could have once prospered in a William Faulkner novel or Eudora Welty short story--were certainly a critical factor in its tremendous success. (One resident into whose orbit Berendt fell, the Lady Chablis, went on to become a minor celebrity in her own right.) But equally important was Berendt's depiction of Savannah socialite Jim Williams as he stands trial for the murder of Danny Hansford, a moody, violence-prone hustler--and sometime companion to Williams--characterized by locals as a "walking streak of sex." So feel free to call it a "true crime classic" without a trace of shame.

From Publishers Weekly
After discovering in the early 1980s that a super-saver fare to Savannah, Ga., cost the same as an entree in a nouvelle Manhattan restaurant, Esquire columnist Berendt spent the next eight years flitting between Savannah and New York City. The result is this collection of smart, sympathetic observations about his colorful Southern neighbors, including a jazz-playing real estate shark; a sexually adventurous art student; the Lady Chablis (' "What was your name before that?" I asked. "Frank," she said.' "); the gossipy Married Woman's Card Club; and an assortment of aging Southern belles. The book is also about the wealthy international antiques dealer Jim Williams, who played an active role in the historic city's restoration--and would also be tried four times for the 1981 shooting death of 21-year-old Danny Handsford, his high-energy, self-destructive house helper. The Williams trials--he died in 1990 of a heart attack at age 59--are lively matches between dueling attorneys fought with shifting evidence, and they serve as both theme and anchor to Berendt's illuminating and captivating travelogue.

From Library Journal
It's difficult to categorize this book. On one level, it is a travelog, recounting former New York magazine editor Berendt's eight years in Savannah, Georgia, that beautifully preserved hothouse of the South where eccentric characters like black drag queen Lady Chablis and charming con man Joe Odom blossom in rich profusion. It is also a true crime tale, the saga of antiques dealer Jim Williams whose 1981 shooting of his sometime lover Danny Hansford in the historic Mercer House obsesses Savannah denizens; they watch as Williams endures four trials and is eventually acquitted, only to die of a heart attack a few months later, haunted (some say) by Hansford's vengeful ghost. Although nonfiction, Berendt's book reads like a novel (he admits he has taken "certain storytelling liberties"), and this reviewer sometimes wondered where the truth ends and the fiction begins. Still, this entertaining book will appeal to many readers. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 9/15/93.

I watch this movie from 5 to 6 times a year....it is my ultimate favorite movie.....I can't really explain why....but it pops into my head and I have to watch it......I NEVER get tired of watching this movie.....just heard The Lady Chablis passed away....that will spoil watching the movie for me....because she was such a special part of the movie and I can't conceive of her not being alive....although I'm hoping I will forget that when watching it

The book: While I did enjoy it.....I thought it could have done without all that history....too much ...kind of spoiled the book...but I could see the parts that were brought out in the movie and I COMMEND the man who wrote the script for the movie.....he was a GENIUS....to be able to pull that movie out of that book was sheer mastery! unfortunately, sometime it's better not to watch the movie after reading the book and vice versa.....but I think it's always wise to do both....because there are things in the book that explain things that don't come out in the movie

Not believable as a writing of fact
By Amazon Customer
I purchased this book for 2 reasons. 1) it was recommended by a friend who knew I was taking my first ever trip to Savannah; 2) my first ever trip to Savannah - it looked like something interesting.

I thought the book would be more about the murder at Mercer House and the trial. Though it did have aspects of it; the author seemed more interested in a transgender (Lady Chablis), debutante balls, and gossip. Nothing connected! He bounced around and if this is supposed to be a story of fact, his writing made it come across as fantasy.

Having visited Savannah, I could recognize streets and such when mentioned in the book, but overall was not thrilled with this. If you want to learn about the Mercer House Murder and trial, this isn't the book for it. After Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil is much better. That one focused on the story I thought I'd get with this one.

"Savannah is very much like a beautiful woman with a dirty face
By Readaholic
When Lady Astor visited Savannah, Georgia in February 1946, she commented, "Savannah is very much like a beautiful woman with a dirty face." After reading "Midnight" I would beg to say that she left out, "with black crotchless panties and an iron mace." John Berendt's assiduous, eight year project captures the imagination and stirs the soul with an introspective portrait of a Southern city seemingly lost in time, place and space. The characters he discovers are as surreal as the story line. This is easily one of the best books I have read. A daring expose' on Southern Living gone bad, this book will make you laugh out loud--and plan a trip to Savannah to see what it is that makes it so undeniably different, and fascinating. I highly recommend this book. It is as titillating as it is mysteriously fascinating, and confirms what Twain asserted, "That truth is indeed stranger than fiction--because fiction has to make sense."

Fifteen-year-old Callum Roe and his younger brother, James, were captured and forced to convert six years ago. From Booklist
Teen warriors populate a great deal of young-adult fiction. Coming up with a fresh take on these protagonists, especially in the dystopian genre, is not an easy feat, but in Callum Roe, Hirsch has created a hero who stands out. First there’s his loyalty to the mutt he rescues—he literally kills for the dog. Then there’s his ability to walk away from his younger brother when it becomes clear the boy has been swallowed up by the fanaticism of the Glorious Path, a military-religious cult that holds half of America under its sway. The brothers were kidnapped by the Path years before, and Cal never gave up on the idea of returning to their true home in Ithaca, New York. Forced to run, Cal treks with his dog through the desert Southwest, seeking to cross into Federal territory. His encounters with those who help or hinder him always surprise. Only at the end of his journey, in a series of convenient plot twists, does the novel falter. Still, recommend this to thrill-seeking, adventure-loving readers. HIGH-DEMAND BACKSTORY: Hirsch hit it big with The Eleventh Plague (2011) and subsequently got a big publisher push for Magisterium (2012). Expect similar national advertising this time around, too. Grades 7-10. --Karen Cruze

It was well-written, I just didn't like it.
By J. Binkerd
This is kind of a difficult one to review for me. Why? Funny you should ask. When I first finished this, I went into Goodreads to rate it (as I do) and was all set to give it three stars. Then I started thinking about the book and it's merits, and had to adjust that to four. As most of the different reviewers out there have stated, the premise of the book feels like it's been ripped from the headlines. (Whether it feels like it "could really happen" or not is a slightly different matter, but I'll get to that later.) The plot moves along quickly, the action is fast paced, and the chapter breaks spaced diabolically in order to keep you reading. The characters are mostly fully-realized and three-dimensional. So why my initial three-star impulse? For all the things that the book does well, I still didn't like it all that much. I can't fully explain that, but I'll do my best later in the review. Full disclosure: I received an uncorrected proof from the publisher in exchange for an honest review as part of the Goodreads FirstReads program.

In the world of The Darkest Path, the United States is a nation divided once again. The Glorious Path, a militant, technophobic cult, has seized control of the southern half of the country. Those living under their control are given a simple choice: join or die. Callum Roe was captured when he was only nine years old, and has spent the last six years doing whatever he has to do in order to protect both himself and his younger brother. Pretending to follow the Path is easy compared to some of the other things he's had to do, especially his last mission to infiltrate a fort of US holdouts near the front lines. Things are looking up for Cal and his brother until a split-second decision makes him an outcast and wanted fugitive. Now the only hope he has is to cross the border between the Path and the US....but the path ahead of him is long and full of obstacles. It's going to take an incredible amount of luck--not to mention all of his questionable survival skills--to emerge unscathed at the end of his journey.

Like I said, I've got wildly mixed reactions to this book. Cal was fleshed out and three-dimensional, but I found it very hard to actually like him. He's pretty selfish, doing anything, saying anything, threatening anyone with anything if it gets him closer to freedom. I'm not saying he's wrong, I'm not even saying I don't understand him, but I found it kind of hard to like him sometimes. The plot was fast-paced and engaging, and a number of the issues that are dealt with are very timely, but I wasn't buying the premise. An American veteran has an epiphany while over somewhere in the Middle East on tour and forms a militant cult when he returns? This cult then manages to take over almost half the country, and is poised to strike the final blow to the tottering, corrupt, decadent United States? I just don't buy it. I also don't buy the characterization of the US Military only being interested in protecting the affluent. In fact, while a number of similar elements merely annoyed me, I was genuinely offended by the depiction of the US armed forces. I'll grant that the depiction of most of the individual troops was better than that of the organization as a whole, but that came too little too late. I was also annoyed by the obvious "Occupy Wall Street" (or its equivalent) bias evident in how the flaws in our society have escalated by the time the story occurs. Don't get me wrong, the system needs some work, but dang! This author has a very dim view of where the next few years will take us, that's all I'm saying. In all fairness, I recognize that this is solely my own political bias sneaking into my reactions, which is one reason I gritted my teeth and upped the review. If I were less annoyed, I might even praise the author for managing to depict a character caught between two very flawed governments at war with each other. Alas, I'm far too annoyed for that.

CONTENT: Some profanity, occasionally strong. I don't recall it being R-rated though. Some strong violence, including animal cruelty at a couple points. Brief sexual innuendo, nothing too severe. The story features a cult, but nothing occultic, if you get my drift.

BOOK SYNOPSIS

USA TODAY bestselling author Jeff Hirsch once again creates a futuristic world with stunning, dramatic realism.

A civil war rages between the Glorious Path--a militant religion based on the teachings of a former US soldier--and what's left of the US government. Fifteen-year-old Callum Roe and his younger brother, James, were captured and forced to convert six years ago. Cal has been working in the Path's dog kennels, and is very close to becoming one of the Path's deadliest secret agents. Then Cal befriends a stray dog named Bear and kills a commander who wants to train him to be a vicious attack dog. This sends Cal and Bear on the run, and sets in motion a series of incredible events that will test Cal's loyalties and end in a fierce battle that the fate of the entire country rests on.

My Thoughts

A couple of things stick out in my mind about this book immediately, the first is that if we ever do have another war on US soil that divides America than we face a horror that I hope to never live to see and the second thing that cemented the story's appeal was the inclusion of Bear as I am an animal lover who finds great joy in reading about the bond between man and his best friend with all the conflicting emotions created by the pitfalls faced in this type of apocalyptic world.

As we follow the choices Cal makes the tension builds unbearably as he faces obstacle after obstacle in his quest to escape both the Path soldiers as well as the members of the US Federal Army so that he can make his way home to Ithaca New York.

Having committed a murder that brands him as a traitor to the followers of Nathan Hill's religious militia Callum Roe had no choice but to go on the run, the little mixed breed stray that was a secondary catalyst for his actions at his side for a good part of his journeys. It broke my heart when Cal discovered that he could not convince James to abandon his loyalties to "The Glorious Path" having to leave him instead and strike out alone with just Bear for companionship.

The journey that the author describes is both one of the mind as well as the body for Cal, he learns that there are still compassionate people amidst the population that is sprinkled with those that have quickly learned the way best to survive is to look out for themselves no matter what the cost to others and he also learns that the 6 years he has spent with his captors has not stolen his own ability to feel compassion for others either. The hardships are many, just struggling to make their way on foot is difficult in and of itself but having to find water and sustenance to stay alive would have defeated Cal completely if not for Bear's keen nose for finding even the most meager of water sources.

This book has a fierce beauty underlying a brutal reality that we may very well be facing in some unknown time in the future, the beauty is the unbreakable nobility of man's spirit when faced with his worst imagined nightmares and the brutal reality is the fact that no matter how much we pray for peace between us and our fellow man there will always be conflicting opinions on the same subject that lead to discord at some point.

This is a story that is filled with contradictions, a story of choices made, sides chosen, the bond of blood and ties that go beyond that of family and most of all it is a look at what may seem to be simply another futuristic tale of doom and gloom but if our world keeps on the way it is the make believe future may become a reality sooner than later.

Not a bad book, just not for me
By Reading is my ESCAPE from Reality!
This isn't a bad book, but it took me a very long time to read. Partly because it is a physical book, I think. At night I mostly read on my Kindle because it is more convenient. But I also think the plot just wasn't that compelling. The blurb on the book jacket (see above) sounds very exciting. But the story just didn't live up to the excitement. Maybe if I had read just this book all at once, it would have been more enjoyable.

The bond between Cal and Bear really touched me. Once Bear trusted Cal, he was a faithful companion and would never leave Cal's side. But I just didn't get some of the actions Cal took when it came to Bear. Even though one time especially it was for Bear's own good, it really bothered me.

Nathan Hill wasn't a very scary villain and we didn't get to know him enough to feel his motives or to hate him. I hated the organization (The Path) more than I hated Hill. I get why Cal and James agreed to join, they didn't want to die. But it seemed like others could have fought back and didn't. The book tells us that Hill was very persuasive and his followers practically worship him. I think that is how James becomes a believer. They are taken at a young age; Cal was 9 and James was younger but I don't remember exactly how much younger. And maybe Cal was able to resist Hill's teachings but James needed something to believe in.

The end was predictable to a point. But I was really disappointed by part of it. I do like that the final ending of the book wasn't cut and dried. You don't know exactly what happens to Cal, James & Bear, but you have hope that they will be okay.
