No conclusion and terribly researched

Toyne Newton's book had me intrigued in the first few chapters, although I've never in my life heard of this group he refers to as the "Friends of Hekate," and then I began to realize that this book has a huge bias slant against both witchcraft and occultism. I'm not even sure if he himself would be able to discern between the two if put on the spot.
Throughout the text he continuously refers to the persons he's investigating as "corrupt" magicians or occultists, and makes many references to witches being of the same stock. Yet it has been my understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong) that in the occult there are no good or evil forces at work, per se: there is only the flesh and the spirit. Newton accuses this mysterious Friends of Hekate of many things, associates them with figures from Europe's past, but with no evidence except his own assumptions, hunches, and the opinions of New Age psychics with what appears to be little or no formal occult or mystical training whatsoever.
The witches of Europe's past have been ridiculed and persecuted before and this book is a blatant smack in the face due to its lack of understanding. And as for the occult, of which I am a student, I think it would aid Toyne Newton to possibly research the occult and mysticism directly rather than reading other so-called occult researchers. It's like a bunch of frightened kids looking into a dark room through a little window, each sharing his or her own fears and building up this paradigm in their own minds of what it is, yet only seeing a little aspect of it and only from one perspective.
This focus on dark forces and "corrupt" magical and psychic work being done on ley lines and sacred sites in the United Kingdom, might it be difficult work to try to correctify the problems of the world? Perhaps because the shift is in work, from one aeon to the next, that it requires conscious effort on the part of those in the know? Maybe at the rate the human race is going it takes covert work, so fools like Newton don't begin the persecution anew? And if it feels so "malign" and evil to Newton and his psychic friends, I must wonder if they stopped to contemplate that because their energy perpetuates the age of the Kali Yuga (or Ragnarok), that anything new and different might appear frightening to them? With such closed minds, it doesn't strike me as odd that they would be afraid of the occult and the changes that educated people are trying to make, and because they allow their fears to manifest from the spirit world, through them, into this world, they take this stance of righteousness against evil because they feel their fears are justified.
At the end of the book, Newton ties in the Friends of Hekate, the occult, witchcraft, et cetera, with the conspiracy theories of extremist David Icke and tries to associate those he's pointed his finger at throughout the book with those of the Bilderburg Conference. I wonder if he never stopped to ponder that maybe there are occultists out there trying to stop those of the Bilderburg? It's media pawns like him that allow their fears to get the best of them and they publish scrap like this to promote the biased view.
Of course, this is only my personal opinion. I only finished this book so that I could honestly review it and not knock it only having read some of it.

An ostenatious title

This book is essentially a history of Hekate worship. The author delves deeply into the history of Hekate worship in all its various forms. Those of you interested in neo-paganism, this book gives a great deal of information on the mythology of this sect. The author's scholarship here is commendable and thus I gave him 3 stars.

However, the subtitle, "The Occult's Quest for World Domination" is a bit over the top. This title is a marketing ploy to catch people's attention (it got mine). The author's research into the mythology of Hekate is lucid; his case for a secret cabal trying to control the world is not. Newton claims that there exists a satanic cult that encompasses many prominent leaders in the U.S. and the U.K. but doesn't offer any details let alone any proof.

If you are looking for a book on the mythology and history of Hekate worship, along with modern examples of it, this book is fine. If you want a book that deals with the occult conspiracy to conquer the world, better tomes exist.

This is the standard by which other rod building books are rated

I once had a copy of the first edition of this book and loaned it out--of course it was never returned. The second edition is updated with even more information. Dale Clemens was not only a first rate rod builder, but was also the owner of what was, at the time the largest rod building supply business in the country.

The book has a lot of information on rod components tested by the company before it was offered for sale in their catalog. Some of the information is dated, but most of it is still germane today. Every rod builder should have a copy of this book on their reference shelf.

Everything you might want to know and then some.

So far, this book covers building fly rods from beginning to end and as I said, then some. There is a lengthy discussion of how the blanks are made and the reasons why some cost more than others (I thought that was particularly interesting).
You will probably sit down and read sections at a time, not straight through from beginning to end.

printing issues, great content

This is a good book for the topic. Newman has a tendency to get a bit too detailed in places for fundamentals and talks ahead of himself in some chapters (although with processes as interconnected as ecotoxicology it would be hard not too. But it presents the major ideas of ecotoxicology in decent detail and decent length; any other ecotoxicology book out there is 5x thicker. It is a manageable read and explains the major toxins well for people not majoring in chemistry or physiology, and illustrates ideas with case studies and vignettes that are very interesting. The way the book is printed is a bit odd, it is on the lower quality paper produced in textbooks nowdays and the pictures are in grayscale; but the case study boxes are printed in blue, which makes them kind of hard to read. I would rather have grayscale boxes and color photos. The book printers also take the opportunity to use lesser quality paper and printing methods without lowering the price of the book. But the book itself is a good addition to the library of a natural sciences student, and increasingly important with today's use of chemicals we don't really understand. The third edition has several additions and improvements over the second edition.

Amphibians and reptiles are successful organisms, and their ectothermal approach to terrestrial vertebrate life is quite different from the endothermal lifestyle of birds and mammals. The internal processes of ectotherms differ in many respects from the corresponding processes in endotherms, and amphibians and reptiles function differently from birds and mammals in communities and ecosystems. Understanding how and why amphibians and reptiles differ from birds and mammals enriches a biological education, and the study of herpetology is a great deal more than just the study of amphibians and reptiles.

In our view, understanding amphibians and reptiles as organisms requires a perspective that integrates their morphology, physiology, behavior, and ecology and places that information in a phylogenetic context. This book does that—it presents the biology of amphibians and reptiles as the product of phylogenetic history and environmental influences acting in both ecological and evolutionary time. We emphasize how amphibians and reptiles function in the broadest sense. For example, ectothermal temperature regulation is reflected in nearly every aspect of the biology of amphibians and reptiles, from their body shapes (extremely small body size and elongate body shape are feasible only for ectotherms) to their role in ecosystems (low-energy flow and high-conversion efficiency are the result of ectothermy).

We have emphasized the integration of information from different biological specialties to produce a picture of amphibians and reptiles as animals that do remarkable things and play important roles in modern ecosystems. Evolution provides the context in which the distinctive characteristics of amphibians and reptiles must be evaluated, and both ancestral and derived features are central to understanding their biology. Throughout the book we have emphasized the use of phylogenetic information to understand the evolution of ecological, behavioral, and physiological characters. This edition of Herpetology reflects both the rate of new developments in the discipline and the continuing contributions of colleagues who have suggested ways to expand and strengthen our treatment of the biology of amphibians and reptiles. The increasing use of cladistic techniques and the incorporation of more kinds of data in phylogenetic analyses have substantially changed our understanding of the history and content of some groups. Those changes are conspicuous in the chapters covering systematics and in the integration of phylogenetic information with studies of natural history. The addition of color photographs of many species provides a far better impression of the appearance of the animals and enhances the presentation of phenomena such as aposematic coloration and mimicry that lose much of their impact in blackand-white photographs.

In response to suggestions from colleagues and students, we have added a chapter on biogeography to illustrate the important contributions that studies of amphibians and reptiles have made to this area and the insights about the ecology and evolution of extant species that only a biogeographic perspective can provide. Splitting the treatment of reproduction and life history into separate chapters—devoted to amphibians and to reptiles—has allowed us to respond to requests that we increase the amount of information about these important topics, and emphasize the major differences between the groups. And the expanded treatment of conservation in this edition reflects the importance this topic is assuming in many herpetology courses as habitat destruction, pollution, and disease exact an ever-increasing toll on the diversity of amphibians and reptiles. Collaboration by the six authors—whose research specializations include autecology, synecology, systematics, evolution, morphology, physiology, and behavior—has produced a treatment that interweaves these areas. We find the interrelationships among different levels of biological organization fascinating and have tried to build students' understanding of these relationships from chapter to chapter. In the case of lizards, for example, one or more aspects of the intricate correlations among phylogeny, foraging mode, diet, morphology, exercise physiology, predator avoidance, social system, and reproductive mode is discussed in nearly every chapter. We have used this technique of building topics in the hope that students will find the complex relationships that emerge intellectually stimulating. Above all, this book is the product of the lifelong fascination each of us has felt for the animals we study. We hope we will succeed in conveying this sense of excitement to our readers.

Excellent conceptually

It's certainly not complete or perfect, and as a reviewer notes, contains some omissions and errors. However, while a textbook should strive to be as good as possible in those areas, it's no substitute for the primary literature in peer-reviewed journals and shouldn't be viewed as such, and instead should be seen as more of a conceptual introduction, in which I feel it does well. It avoids the tempting parade-of-taxa style, and instead focuses on the important concepts uniting reptiles and to an extent all animals, such as osmoregulation, feeding, locomotion, reproductive strategies, etc.

The section dealing with my primary focus, locomotion, is rather sparse, and contains some outdated information, but nothing that can't be corrected with a quick read through the literature. With any luck, my own work will be in the next edition.

About the Author
George Beinhorn’s articles and photography have appeared in Running Times, Trail Runner, Marathon & Beyond, Sports Afield, and Runner’s World, where he was a staff editor and photographer from 1972–76. He lives in Silicon Valley, where he serves clients in technology and business as a writer and editor.

We can all learn from runners

I became aware of George Beinhorn years ago when he was an editor at Runner’s World magazine. Although my primary interest is strength training, I’ve learned a lot about training and motivation from runners. My first direct contact with Beinhorn came in 2009, when he used me to illustrate that runners and bodybuilders have much in common. For example, he observed that recovery and listening to the body are crucial to long-term success in both forms of training. That led to an exchange of emails which made it abundantly clear that George Beinhorn is a walking encyclopedia of running—and an example of how running can build the body and mind. He has poured the accumulated wisdom of a lifetime into The Joyful Athlete, which explains—and illustrates—how improvement and joy go together—in all forms of physical training. While i have known for some years that George was a runner,I had no idea what an accomplished runner he is. More importantly his "joyful" attitude has been evident in his behavior---and now in his very readable book. It is both a "joyful" and informative read.

Whether you’re an elite athlete or a sedentary person who never exercises, you’ll find this book wonderfully readable, earthy and inspiring. As I read, I thought over and over that it’s a book about much more than sports and exercise. It’s about ways of having a happier life in whatever we do – as parents, partners, and business leaders. I’m not an athlete, my “sport” is walking with friends. Yet I particularly enjoyed the parts of the book about following our hearts and balancing logic and reason by listening to our calm, intuitive feelings. My favorite part was where the author talks about how the lessons we learn in life are more important than whether we win or lose. Almost every page had useful insights that inspired me.
