Excellent introduction to splines for the non-mathematician

One of the greates assets of this book is that it is fairly comprehensive while still using a minimum amount of mathematics. The style is lucid, easy to follow; the numerous C-like algorithms can be adapted to one's own use, and deal with the most important aspect of NURBS. This is easily the best introductory NURBS text. The only problem I see is the lack of discussion for ray-surface intersection tests, which are necessary if NURBS are to be rendered by raytracing. I recommend "The Nurbs Book" to any engineers and graphics professionals interested in curved surfaces.

Good reference for implementers who are familiar with NURBS

This book is best for those who have at least become familiar with Bezier and NURBS curves and surfaces and want to start implementing some programs.
The illustrations are not as clear as they could be so it may make it a little difficult for first-timers to understand. If you're unfamiliar with Bezier and NURBS curves then "Curves and Surfaces for CAGD" by Farin is probably a better place to start. But if you get Farin's book make sure to get the 5th edition since earlier editions aren't as clear.
With that said there is a wealth of information about creating and manipulating NURBS geometry in this book. All explanations are followed by code implementation. The code is a little difficult to understand at first, but if you stick with it you'll understand their coding style.

Perfect for the programmer working with NURBS.

I have a reasonable if dated math background, but I'm not a mathematician, I'm a programmer. I was able to work through enough of the math to extract very practical and useful knowledge for my graphics programming work.
I've gone through 3 other graphics book trying to get enough clear information on NURBs, but they were all either inadequate or obscure.

Suprisingly good

"Tuesday the Rabbi Saw Red" is one of the best mysteries out there. It takes place mainly on a Massachusetts college campus during the Vietnam era. Kemelman opens up with pieces of information that seem irrelevant, but everything falls into place. There is a clear plot, a defined theme, and the characters are real. This book will keep you wondering "whodunit" until the end.

A rabbi is a judge

TUESDAY THE RABBI SAW RED (1973, 272 pages) by Harry Kemelman is the 6th Rabbi Small mystery in the 9 years since Kemelman created the character. By now, Kemelman is settled well into his routine, but this novel in my opinion is the best I have read so far. Such was the drooping quality that I was in despair with the last two novels.

Leaving behind his rat-bastard congregation in little Barnard's Crossing, Rabbi Small has agreed to teach a class in Jewish philosophy at a Boston college. Of course, one of the professors is in his congregation and at some point in the novel - blink and you'll miss it - the rabbi performs the marriage for this fellow. It certainly seems the security and feelings are lax, considering this college had been bombed the previous year.

Rabbi Small, revealing an ache to be a real teacher, finds college life to be a disappointment. Arrogant and snotty as usual, he cannot seem to connect with the kids he teaches - though at least one of the students is a Vietnam vet. But wherever the rabbi goes, the game's afoot. Sure enough, a bombing occurs one day as the rabbi is on his way home from class.

But only during the investigation is a body uncovered - a murdered body, and not murdered by the bomb as is first thought. The rabbi cannot put on a different hat, but he puts on his 'thinking yarmulke' to solve the crime in his own plodding, unobtrusive way. This is a compelling, interesting story, just what all of the novels should have been ... but weren't. There is everything political from the early 1970s here, from the "Weathervanes" (thinly and pointlessly disguised Weathermen) to arguments about what a rabbi's true function is.

Did any of you know a rabbi was originally supposed to be a judge for the community? Not a minister, not even a teacher. A JUDGE.

This is Kemelman's best work, as I said, not just because more fur flies realistically or because Kemelman has discovered the use of swearing in dialogue. Kemelman has found his footing here, abandoned some of his extremely old and tiresome bad habits, fed the reader with all the detail, the mystery, befitting this excellent detective Kemelman created in the early 1960s.

The bumps in logic and ideas are small potatoes - Kemelman seems to have been watching lots of "Columbo" when he wrote this and conceived of the murder plot. He still retains some bad literary habits but you'll hardly notice them here. It is almost as if Kemelman was transported out of himself when he wrote this particular mystery. There is good Jewish religious learning in here as well, a promise on which Kemelman did not always make good.

Further, there is pure literary delight here as well. Some passages of this reminded me of the best in mystery I have read; other passages evoke the best of HARRY POTTER and that is excellent in my opinion. Few people wrote this way at the time. By all means, as far as I am concerned, THIS is the Rabbi David Small mystery you should start with - you may get bored and discouraged if you start chronologically as I did.

NOTE: You may notice the page numbers suddenly increasing in the novels, if you read my reviews and note the chronological details. That is due to a fortunate decision on the part of Fawcett to use a larger, nicer font. The novels themselves are roughly the same length. The change literally kept me reading, and I wish it had been done sooner.

Tuesday The Rabbi Saw Red

I have enjoyed these books in the past. Now that I'm ordering books to my Kindle Touch, I always check to see how many pages are in the book. This and others have not been long enough for me to pay to have in my reader.

Also, these books are not very exciting and a little simple. They would be good for someone early to reading mysteries, but not for someone more adult.

I still enjoyed reading Tuesday The Rabbi Saw Red because it was familiar and not gruesome. Also, it gave information about conservative practitioners of Judaism. Knowlege of various religions are very interesting to me.

Faye Kellerman mysteries are extremely interesting in this regard, and a lot more grown up. Her books are favorites for me.

Must read for anyone interested in investing or working in the education industry

This is the first book I've come across that explains the business of education - and its unique challenges. Jonathan does a great job of illustrating the many obstacles for private entrepreneurs in his four case studies - and his list of lessons is a mandatory tool for any future would-be entrepreneurs and investors in this $1.3 trillion industry.
I would have appreciated a couple of case studies of successes to round out the book - to show illustrate his comments about what does work. Maybe in the second edition?

Very Good But Quite Technical

This book was well-written and researched, but there are dense parts within it that make it difficult to read. Nevertheless, I think that it is a must-read for anyone thinking of building a venture to improve education. That person needs to know what he or she is doing, and needs to have someone familiar with the industry on board.

Fatty! Big Nose! Squirt!

Mr. Rude is not just very rude, he is "extraordinarily rude!" If he sees someone with a big nose, he will tell them. If he sees someone that is overweight, he calls them "Fatty" along with making a very disrespectful comment! Mr. Rude does not have a Welcome Mat! No, he has crossed that out and written "GO AWAY" so you can imagine how mad he is when Mr. Happy, after witnessing Mr. Rude's behavior, comes to visit.

No matter how much Mr. Rude rants and rages, Mr. Happy just sits there smiling at him. How long does Mr. Happy stay? What does Mr. Rude discover he has by the end? You'll have to read the book to find out but let me tell you that this is a GREAT book for showing children how not to behave. When they slip up and find themselves being rude, reminding them of the story will bring a smile and hopefully a change of attitude pretty pronto!

We love them and will buy the whole collection

My dad bought me one of these books every time he went out of town on business. I loved them then, and I read them now to my 5-year-old. It is so fun to collect all of the books and they are very reasonable. They are also adorable stories with cute, useful morals. We love the art in the books and try to draw our own pictures later. My son absolutely loves these books as a fast, entertaining read each night. We will buy them all. ;)

Great story, watch out for Amazon's mislabelling of the order the books come in

This story is excellent and if you have played The Witcher videogames then you will appreciate it all the more (and vice versa)

I'm really just writing this review so people don't fall into the same trap that I did and skip over Swords of Destiny before reading this one. Amazon has this labelled as Book 2 and has Swords of Destiny labelled as Book 4. That is because Swords of Destiny was published later (the English version at least), but in terms of the story this is the order I would recommend reading them in: Last Wish, Swords of Destiny, Blood of Elves, Time of Contempt, Tower of Swallows, and Lady of the Lake (coming out in 2017). The Last Wish and Swords of Destiny are collections of short stories, but the rest all follow a specific story arc so it is really better to at least read the rest in the order that I mentioned. Hope that helps!

Great Read (No Spoilers)

I was excited to read this book after reading BOTH of the short story books that precede it. It's from a different perspective than the other books. Less Geralt (more dialogue and less action) than the short story books, but it's great story telling nonetheless. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this, and am excited to move onto the next installment.

**IMPORTNANT** The second shorty story book that precedes this book, which gives a TON of background information (that I cannot imagine enjoying this book as much as I did without having), never got published in English! If you enjoyed The Last Wish and are considering this book, READ THE SECOND SHORTY STORY BOOK! It's super easy to find a (very readable) fan translation! Just Google 'The Sword of Destiny fan translation' and you'll find a .pdf, .epub, and .mobi (which works on the kindle) in no time. I cannot stress how important it is to read the second short story book first! It's a great read as well. A lot of the negative reviews on Amazon are from people who didn't read the second short story book! Don't make their mistake!

Hard to say, seeing as how we begin in the middle

As much as I enjoyed Last Wish, the departure from the short story format was mildly disappointing purely because it was so darn enjoyable. I could forgive that happily were it not for the gaping hole that is the book that goes in between not being available. As much as I love Geralt and the world of the witchers, I really can't suggest this book unless/until the missing book that ties this with Last Wish is available. It's absence defies all reason and rationale. Jumping from there to here made this work, excellent though it may be in it's proper order, feel much like I was reading some bastardized fan fiction that assumes much that we are just left to guess about. This may be a fantastic work but I won't ever appreciate it as I should until some fool of a publisher figures out when telling a story the beginning is a good place to start......Find someone who hasn't read A Song of Fire and Ice series and start them on A Clash of Kings. Or if you find someone who has been living in a cave, start them on The Two Towers. See how awesome they think George RR Martin or Tolkien are when you start them off in the middle of the story.

About the Author
Born on 15 October 1931, at Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Dr. Avul Pakir Jainulabdeen Abdul Kalam specialized in aeronautical engineering from Madras Institute of Technology. Dr. Kalam is one of the most distinguished scientists of India and has received honorary doctorates from fortyfive universities and institutions in India and abroad. He has been awarded the Padma Bhushan (1981), the Padma Vibhushan (1990) and India's highest civilian award, the Bharat Ratna (1997). He has also received the King Charles II medal (2007), the Woodrow Wilson Award (2008), the Hoover Award (2008) and the International Von Karman Wings Award (2009) among other international accolades. Dr Kalam became the eleventh President of India on 25 July 2002. His focus and greatest ambition remains finding ways to transform India into a developed nation.
