Alfred's Utterly Confusing Line of Music Theory Books

This is a good series if you are trying to learn music theory. The material is well organized, and clearly explained. Anyone can learn the essentials of music theory from these books.

Unfortunately, the material is available in so many formats, you can get lost trying to figure out which version to buy.

1st up, you can buy 3 separate books. Since each book is only about 40 pages long, this really doesn't make that much sense. Also, you are going to want the ear training CDs. There are only 2 CDs for the 3 books. and you have to buy them as a complete set.

So, you want to buy all the material at once. That brings us to this collection, which contains the text from all three books, but lacks the CDs.

As I mentioned, the CDs are available separately, but if you could buy the book plus the CDs as a single package, you could save a little bit over purchasing both items separately.

But, where is this all-in-one package? You might expect this to be called "Alfred's Essential of Music Theory Complete (Books 1 - 3 plus Ear Training CDs)."

Alas, it is not. It's called "Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory: A Complete Self-Study Course for All Musicians (Book & 2 CDs)", and you can find it on Amazon here:

This version also appears to have the Answer Key (which you would have to purchase separately, for even more money, if you wanted to check the answers to the quizzes). I say "appears" because I foolishly purchased this version of the product, along with the separate CDs. But glancing at the Table of Contents of the other edition has convinced me that it includes the Answer Key as well.

To summarize: this material is well worth buying, but there are too many ways to purchase it. Do yourself a favor, and buy the Complete Self-Study Course, not this edition.

Concise--Maybe Too Concise

I have been playing guitar almost completely by ear for over 30 years and have long wanted to learn a little theory to inform me as to what I've been doing all this time. I am almost finished with the three books within this book, and they have been enormously helpful in expanding on the two years of piano lessons I took as a child as well as on the bits and pieces of technical knowledge I have picked up while playing guitar.

The book is very compact and I could imagine it might be too brief in its explanations to be useful to someone with absolutely no prior musical training. Going back through the beginning of it, I cannot find anyplace where it mentions the difference between major and minor intervals in terms of half-steps, for instance. Had I not known that much already, it would have been much more confusing learning about the difference between a major and minor third, sixth, or seventh.

As is, I have found the book only slightly confusing. A little internet research (not too much!) and a lot of self-directed practice with both guitar and keyboard seem necessary to make the material at all concrete or to explore any of the concepts in any kind of depth. The written exercises are useful to a point--I am not entirely certain that I need to be able to draw rests, sharps or flats perfectly to understand what they are, but placing notes on the staff by hand provides a way to learn visually and spatially, making the theory practical before one applies the lessons directly to an instrument.

I would recommend this book to anyone who knows a little about music and wants to know more and is willing and able to be creative in supplementing concise textbook material with self-directed practice.

Excellent music theory book for adults

This is an excellent music theory instruction manual for an adult, perhaps one already a bit familiar with music. It might be too fast for a beginner. It provides all of the terms and explains everything well. It also includes practice for the concepts. Some of the pages will require much re-reading to comprehend more fully as time goes on. The book also includes two CD's for listening practice. I am learning over again how to play the piano in my retirement, and I have found this book to be invaluable!

great book -- especially for beginners

This is a beautiful, well-researched book. (Although it has 288 pages, it is small in size, so don't be alarmed when you get the package.) The book is divided into two parts:

Part One: The Power of Essential Oils -- covers what they are and how they're produced, safe usage of them, basics on how to blend them, and how to use them (including massage, baths, inhalations, vaporizers, compresses). Part One takes up about 1/4 of the book.

Part Two: A Guide to the Oils -- this section covers each oil in a little more detail. The oils are not arranged alphabetically as you'd expect, but are sorted into categories such as Muscle Treats (those best for muscles), Skin Enhancers (best for your skin), Easy Breathers, Warming Stimulants...ending with Uplifting Aromas. Each of these categories contains the profiles of 5 to 13 essential oils. For instance, the Warming Stimulants section contains info on these oils: cinnamon leaf, West Indian bay, cubeb seed, black pepper, and clove bud. Part Two takes up most of the book.

Then on each oil profile page, there are these small sections:
1) a summary of how the oil is extracted, where it is produced, and notes about the scent
2) Safety First -- any safety concerns for that oil
3) Supporting the Spirit -- "this oil encourages creativity" or "this oil renews energy levels"
4) Easing the Mind -- "to calm irritability, use 4 drops of this oil in a warm bath"
5) Healing the Body -- "to clear sinusitis, try an inhalation of 2 drops laurel and 2 drops lemon"

This book easily gets five stars for being an excellent resource for those new to working with essential oils. However, if you have years of experience working with essential oils and already create your own healing blends, I don't think this is the book for you. It's beautifully laid out, has a table of contents and an index so you can find what you're looking for -- it just doesn't offer any new/detailed information. One thing I would have liked to have seen is a list of therapeutic properties for the oils (e.g., lavender has analgesic, antidepressant, antiseptic, and antiviral properties).

I LOVE her Skin Mousse recipe in this book! It's perfect for sensitive skin.

As many other reviews have mentioned, it's an oddly small book. Perhaps that's why the book has so many pages. The book easily fits in my bag and I'm able to whip it out any moment to read a few pages while standing on cue. However, the type could be a bit larger. I don't recall the author mentioning why she chose the size of the book. And while the book is very well organized and comprehensive for it's size, it's not exactly a pocket guide either. That is to say, it doesn't have 'lists' or a 'quick reference' section. The glossary and reference page is small, with a decent index.

The layout and illustrations make the book very simple to follow. The author does an excellent job of keeping jargon down and she uses a lot of the same oils for the various recipe groupings (helping the user to stretch the function of each oil).

The book has a good balance of oils in price and availability from common or exotic to low cost or astronomical (both carrier and Essential).

Her writing style piques interest and the recipes are nice too. This is an excellent first Essential Oil book for a novice and provides a solid foundation on common oils necessary to engage merchants or aromatherapists intelligently.

Lots of Great Information!

What a handy resource to have! First of all, the size is small, but it's a well made small book. The pages are heavy weight & the cover is laminated. The font size is small, too, but it did not effect my ability to read it. I do have to wear readers to read anything these days as it stands! There are lots of photo images which I love! The page layouts are very attractive. You do have to open the book very wide in order to fully read everything. I am afraid that over continued use, this could effect the spine and the gluing. I did take a picture of the inside of the book so it can be seen. The information in the book is wonderful! There's an index which is very useful, too. There is also a Table of Contents so you can easily find the Essential Oil that you are looking for directly. The sections are color coded. If you are looking for information on using Essential Oils to help with breathing, then you go to the section called Easy Breathers. Then within that section, each 2 page layout is about a different Essential Oil and how to use it to help with breathing. Within each section, they are not in alphabetical order, which if they were, it might be more helpful. For each oil, there is safety information, recipes for blends using that oil, basic information on the plant it is derived from, and how to use it for spirit, mind, & body uses. I consider myself a beginner with Essential Oils and I find this guide book to be very thorough and helpful!

Many teens will identify with the boy's self-doubt and his struggle to be comfortable with himself. This is one of those rare novels that will appeal equally to boys and girls. It's a lot of fun, but it also has heart.

Realistic, funny book that boys will definitely like

That hard-to-find book--realistic fiction about a boy that boys will enjoy. Girls will like this too. Jason is a character teenagers can identify with, as he struggles with family, school, and romance. Seattle readers will enjoy the local setting.

Somewhat Boring

Jason's parents are divorced, his best friend has a new girlfriend every week, and he has no romance in his life. His only solace is the love of his dog, and his online friend, Allison Gray. But when his father decides to get married to someone who resembles Miss Piggy, Jason's life takes a turn for the worse. Because now, not only does he have to deal with a new stepmother, but also a new stepbrother. Whom just happens to be Mr. High School All-American, and very popular with the ladies. But when his online pal wants a picture of him, and he sends one of his stepbrother, his life may just get a little bit worse.
I personally would not recommend this book to anyone. The characters are boring and uninteresting. And the plot is a bit cliched. I recommend reading something, like "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" instead of this.

I actually liked this book. Well i liked it because its about a boy thats about the same age as i am, so i can relate to some of his problems. Also because it was just a fun book to read, there was hardly ever a time when i got bored reading it. The last reason is because it had a lot of different emotions, it had sad times, happy times, and funny times.

My favorite part in the book was whenever he met Alison Gray online. It showed the conversation they were actually having in the chat room. They even talked like most kids do today. It also showed what everyone else was saying in the chat room.

The story elements that were most vivid were the characters and setting. They really described the characters and i could really picture them in my head. Same for the setting they used a lot of details.

No, it's not a collection of the film critic's musings but a revival of a long dormant genre: the anthology of writing about film. Ebert arranges over 100 pieces?many of them book excerpts?into categories (Movie Stars, The Business, Early Days, Genres, etc.) and provides a brief introduction to each. The range is astonishing, from H.L. Mencken writing about Valentino to an excerpt from a web site devoted to Quentin Tarantino. Even novels that capture the moviegoing experience of the movie business have been excerpted. It's a first-rate collection that will stimulate interest in both the movies mentioned and the authors anthologized. One quibble: Ebert doesn't always provide publication dates. Two thumbs up, 'way up...

If you love the movies, if you love good reading and if you love the combination of the two like I do, you will *loooooove* this: a collection of notes, essays, interviews and memoirs by the movie makers, critics and reveiwers, about the icons, the good, the bad and the dirty of Hollywood and the movies.
There's so much good stuff in this, I don't know where to start
to inform you about it. Let me try the bullet approach.
*The important movie critics, of course, are here. Pauline Kael
does a tango with Norman Mailer on the flick "Last Tango in Paris", Sarris and Tynan as well as Editor Ebert are included
here.
*There's a great Truman Capote piece where he and Marilyn Monroe
(in anti-Monroe drag) hang out and dish the dirt. Capote tries to get her to admit that she's seeing writer Arthur Miller.
*Julia Phillips tells of the coked up, spiked up, hyped up days before and after the time she won the Oscar for her producing The Sting.
*There's hilarious sections on WC Fields and Baby Leroy (WC spikes Leroy's orange juice bottle with gin--"the child was more or less restored to consciousness, but in the scene that followed Turog (the director) complained of his lack of animation.") and Groucho Marx' letters to Warners Bros. executives about what "A Night in Casablanca" entailed. (The executives took umbrage to the use of Casablanca in the title.
Groucho, took umbrage to how absurd these guys were so he took the absurdity to another level.)
*There's the Spike Lee "Do the Right Thing" notes which basically outlines the entire film, but are extremely interesting none the less, there's the infamous Gleave and Forest FAQ on Quintin Tarintino's "Pulp Fiction".
*John Waters dishes the dirt on the polyester, back door, wrapped in cellophane and tossed in the dumpster LA. Funny stuff
*Janet Leigh on Hitchcock and the infamous shower scene, Hitchcock on Hitchcock's style of directing, Mamet on Mamet's style of directing.
*Peter Bogdanovich does a excellent piece on Humphrey Bogart and the Bogey Mystique. You are gonna luv that one, trust me.
*Terry 'Waiting to Exhale' McMillian tells us what growing up in Michigan and having the "Wizard of Oz" come on television has meant to her and her family.
And I haven't even scratched the surface of the many pleasures of this great undertaking. There's Mae West, there's Doris Day, there's Orson Welles, there's Frederico Fellini, there's Cary Grant and there's essays from the great novels Hollywood Babylon, Get Shorty and The Player.
There's hours and hours of reading pleasure in this fantastic book. "For me, no other art form touches me the way movies do", says Ebert. I heartily concur and I appreciate that his love of the movies has inspired him to put together this collection.

One of the Greatest Books on Film ever put together

In 1996 Ol' Rog published one of the greatest compilations of film related writing ever produced.

It's huge in more than just its page content, and its cover deserves to be made into a wall poster, and framed.

The cover is the inside of a Movie Palace, & the patrons are a select company of worthies one can only dream about having in the room at the same time....

Sitting front & center are Roger, Orson Welles, and looking, with an arched eyebrow, over Orsons' shoulder is Alfred Hitchcock, while over Rogers is John Huston.

In a funny juxtoposition, 3 rows back, but seen between the heads of Orson & Roger is Woody Allen with his finger to his lips. :-)

Spread out around these gents are Cary Grant, John Wayne, Louise Brooks, Akira Kurosawa, Doris day, Marilyn Monroe, James Dean, Quentin Tarantino, Leo Tolstoy, Katherine hepburn, Francois Truffaut, Buster Keaton, and Charlie Chaplin.

Entertaining from titles to credits

The picture of Ebert on the cover of this book says it all: he's gazingup at the movie screen, captured, awed, almost grateful. This marvelousanthology is his happy acknowledgement that others feel the same way about movies. It's a collection of takes on the industry--be it a particular film, a favorite star, or the behemoth that is Hollywood--from very talented participants in it. The information is fascinating, but it's the palpable love and excitement for movies that really gets across. One example: after reading reviews of "Last Tango in Paris" by Pauline Kael and Norman Mailer, I ran to the video store to rent it. (And then I ran to the bookstore for more Mailer!) I also found eerie the remarkable prescience of people like Maxim Gorky and Leo Tolstoy in their anticipation of how the industry would develop. Every single contribution to this book is colorful and fun. If you love movies, it's an important book to have.

Short, Sexy and Steamy!!!!

Eirik is the last of his kind, saved when all the other Dire wolves were annihilated by a rival clan. He is the supreme alpha over all the races of wolves, so his word should be law, right? Not exactly. For years, Eirik has had to hide the fact that he is in love with his guard Gunnar. Eirik is the last Dire wolf and the alpha, Gunnar is beneath him and therefore, the council will not recognize them as mates. Eirik is determined to be open about his and Gunnar's relationship, no longer hiding it behind closed doors. But before he can voice that claim the clan that almost killed off Eirik's kind show up and request to be allowed to return to the council, they come baring a gift.

Lief has no memory of his life up until Yao supposedly found him on the streets. It's a shock to everyone when Lief stands before Eirik, the reaction he and Eirik have to each other. Not only is Lief a Dire wolf, he is Eirik's blood mate. Gunnar is less than pleased at this recent development. On the cusp of finally being able to love Eirik out in the open, their plans change when Lief appears. No one trusts the newcomer with their precious King and they try to keep Eirik out of arms reach, but Eirik is determined to figure out the truth about Lief, not to mention the blood mate bond is pulling them to each other. As Eirik and Gunnar work to figure out the truth about Lief, where he comes from, why he suddenly appears after so many years. Lief finds himself having disturbing dreams. The truth of the matter is far more disturbing than just Lief's dreams.

Short, Sexy and Steamy!!!! My three favorite colors. This is my first read by this author, but it will not be my last. I love the style of writing, the character development and atmosphere of the story. The rival clan that has been exiled, resorting to any means necessary to not only gain a seat on the council again, but to overthrow the king and take the throne. The love triangle aspect was handled well without a lot of dragging out and angst overshadowing that aspect of the story. Eirik truly loves Gunnar, but his body cannot deny the pull to his blood mate. Gunnar understands the pull, he knows how rare and important a blood mate connection is, but it doesn't stop his heart from breaking at the implications. And poor Lief, dropped on his head basically, no idea why he is there or where he came from. There was just enough angst and tension before Eirik and Gunnar come to the conclusion that Eirik doesn't have to make a choice, he can have both.

If you are a fan of Menage storylines, shifter tales, fast paced reads with substance and a hole lot of MM that moves to MMM action going on... definitely a must read.

Eirik, the king longed to claim his lover, regardless what the laws say. Love is love, bloodlines don't matter.
Eirik, Gunner and Leif will grow the family they desire. Its a new world for the king and his people, and I can not wait to see whats next....This was sexy hot, exciting and fantastic

King Eirik is the last Dire Wolf now that his foster father Uffe has died. Uffe saved the Kings life raised him after the Hokkaido, an Asian branch of wolves attacked and slaughtered Eirik’s father and remaining family members. Uffe searched for other surviving Dire Wolves for centuries but he never found another one.
The werewolves in The Last Dire Wolf are all male and as such they only ever mate with other males of the same species; it is forbidden for any of them to mate or breed with another species. The bloodlines must be kept pure. Every two-thousand years or so one of the males will fall for the charms of a woman and mate with her and then they’re banished from the pack. Eirik has been in love with his Guard Gunnar for decades but he hasn’t ever been able to acknowledge him publicly. Gunnar knows why they can never be together officially but that doesn’t mean it hurts any less.
After Uffe dies and the realisation that he really is all alone in the world, that he really is the last Dire Wolf Eirik decides it’s time for things to change and sets about to change the laws he has previously gone along with because it was always easier not to rock the boat with the councillors. Just as Eirik is about declare that you can mate with whomever you love regardless of species or bloodlines so that he can mate with Gunnar, he is presented with a “gift” from the Hokkaido, in the form of Leif a Dire Wolf who turns out to be his blood mate!
Gunnar is devastated when he realises that Leif is Eirik’s blood mate as all he can see is him being abandoned now that another Dire Wolf has been discovered. Eirik is determined not to do anything with Leif because there is something incredibly suspicious about the fact that their enemy, the Hokkaido just happens to ‘find’ a Dire Wolf who turns out to be his blood mate?
Together they all try to find out exactly who Leif is and where he came from. Not to mention they had to get to the bottom of how the Hokkaido come to have Leif to hand him gift him to Eirik. Is he a spy, an assassin? Exactly who and what is Leif? You do get the answers to these questions but I was disappointed with the minimal amount of interaction between the three MC’s.
