Definitely Worth Reading

This is a well-written story, but as a thriller/mystery reader I somehow expected more from it. Although the characters were believable, the story moved rather slowly and I didn't find as many twists and turns as I had anticipated. Once the character of Marianne was introduced, I felt like I knew immediately where the story was going to go. I wanted to identify more with the character of Claire, but found myself unable to be attached to such an insecure woman. The book is definitely worth a try, but some hard-core fans of thriller or suspense novels will not be satisfied.

Worthy read indeed, might keep you up nights!

For drama queens, this book has plenty. A bit one-sided occasionally, but overall I really enjoyed from beginning to end. Teachers should be wary of the positions they allow themselves to be placed in with students. Things are not always what they appear to be. The characters were nicely developed. The pacing was just right. Enough twists to highlight the suspense. Nice job of editing, no errors. Overall, a good read!

Wow! Spoiler Alert!

I was taken in by the main characters in this book and couldn't put it down until the last page! I knew something was off about Lorna from the beginning but the plot just kept thickening and she refused to answer any important questions posed to her so I began to suspect she was lying but not to the extent to which she did in this story!
Being a teacher myself I was rather disappointed that Claire let a student affect her to the degree she did and that she let herself get talked out of reporting anything to the proper authorities! I don't know what the laws are in Britain but in the United States we are required by law to report any suspicion of child abuse or we lose our license to teach. This woman became obsessed with this mentally ill child!
The outcome and the ending satisfied me to a degree but this teacher was still under the child's spell in the end even after what she had been through with her.
This is a must read and I loved it because it was intriguing until the last page!

Ricoeur is one of the major French philosophers of the 20th century. In these essays, originally delivered as lectures at the Institute for the Human Sciences at Vienna, he endeavors to connect the various senses of recognition. We speak, for instance, of recognizing physical objects, recognizing other people, recognizing our responsibility for actions, and being recognized by others. Ricoeur finds a transition from an active to a passive voice in these various senses of the verb to recognize and organizes his discussion around this transition. He begins by focusing on the knowledge of objects, with a careful account of Immanuel Kant’s move away from the substantial self of René Descartes. He then considers Henri Bergson’s notion of memory and moves on to an analysis of mutual recognition that heavily stresses the discussions of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. With his characteristic erudition, Ricoeur also surveys the views of sociologist and anthropologist Marcel Mauss as well as those of his successors and critics. He displays a remarkable ability to convey sympathetically the ideas of a widely disparate group of thinkers and makes an excellent case, in readily comprehensible language, for the centrality of recognition in modern philosophy. In the course of this trajectory, Ricoeur makes connections between authors and philosophical themes, stretching over a vast area of time and subject. This rich book gives one a path through much of Ricoeur’s work on language, narration, memory and the self; but it also shows the deep connections between so many disparate discussions. Who would have thought that reading Marcel Mauss could illuminate Mandela and the Truth and Reconciliation Commission? Who could have seen the connections between the modern rage for objectification and the occultation agency, ipse-identity, narrative, dialogicality, and a host of other issues? A humanist of immense learning, a scholar of both literature and the human sciences (as is evident from Seuil’s three-volume edition of his lectures), a traveler receptive to Anglo-Saxon culture and German tradition, Paul Ricoeur is difficult to identify with a single school or intellectual current. Christianity, phenomenology, hermeneutics, psychoanalysis, linguistics, and history have all to some extent shaped his thought. But if his ideas are, in essence, most closely allied with Christian existentialism and with personalism, they cannot easily be reduced to a system. It seems that [for Ricoeur] the study of language, far from being an end in itself, was always just another way of asking the questions that long preoccupied him: those of being and of action. Nostalgic for an ontology that Nietzsche seemed to have invalidated, striving to find rules for moral conduct in ethical reasoning, deeply concerned about the age he lived in yet at the same time wary of engaged action, Ricoeur ultimately incarnated―and reflected the most radical consequences of―the wrenching contradictions that have characterized humanist thought since the early twentieth century. This tragic authenticity, which illuminates the entire span of his long intellectual journey, also makes his writings exemplary evidence of the ‘crisis’ of our modernity. And it is no doubt this value as ‘evidence’ that explains why his corpus of work―which was (like the work of his friend Emmanuel Levinas) to some extent misunderstood by French intellectuals―has, since the mid-1980s, attracted renewed interest in France and even more in the rest of the world. This is how instruction manuals should be written

I edit and lay out books for a living, and I supplement my brief formal education by self-teaching from books. I have no fewer than 15 such manuals on the shelf over my Mac, on subjects ranging from HTML to the Adobe Creative Suite to QuickBooks and beyond. I wish Claudia McCue had written every one of them. Her writing is clear and concise -- she clearly knows her subject matter AND how people learn. In the editorial part of my career I've worked on hundreds of nonfiction titles, and I can assure you that this is a rare combination. The writing is not only informative, it's engaging (and frequently funny); this is the only manual I've ever read cover to cover, like a novel.

The author's explanations of complex subjects are wonderful. Until now, for example, I've never really understood concepts like trapping and RIP-ping. I've always absorbed the minimum I needed to know while the rest of the explanation turned into the "wahh-wahh" adult voices in a Peanuts cartoon. Whether that's due to the density of my own skull or the poor explanations I was getting, I don't know -- what I do know is that this author's explanations have effectively closed the circuit for me on these subjects. I actually get them now. And then there are the chapters with production tips for each relevant program in the Creative Suite -- they're like mini-Master Classes. I can't express how much my workflow has improved after reading this book in general and these chapters in particular.

After a couple of months on my desk, my copy is dog-eared and bristling with sticky-notes. I've referred to it for different questions on each of my last three print projects (two trade paperbacks and a coffee-table book), and I expect I'll be referring to it for many projects to come.

A must have wealth of knowledge!

Claudia has put together a catalog of information that any designer who prints must read!

Her vast knowledge in the printing industry reflects in each chapter with easy to grasp, pertinent information. This has become my go to book in my new career as a Graphic Designer/ Prepress Operator.
Trust me, this is a must have for any designer to keep with them.
A great guide for the various aspects of print design whether you're working in house printing or sending them off to a press. They will thank you greatly if you follow Claudia's guides for setting up files and artwork, and you might even save yourself or your company some money.
She is an InDesign Master so you couldn't learn from a better teacher. Her tips on how to utilize the Adobe Creative Cloud Suite are great.
Just quit reading this review and go buy this book if you are thinking about it, it will pay for itself with its content.

About the Author
Steven P. Lab (Ph.D., Criminology, Florida State University, 1982) has been a member of the Criminal Justice faculty at Bowling Green State University since 1987 and is currently Professor and Director of the Criminal Justice Program and Chair of the Department of Human Services. Dr. Lab is a nationally recognized expert in the area of crime prevention and is the author of Crime Prevention: Approaches, Practices and Evaluations, Fifth Edition. His research interests also include juvenile delinquency, school crime, and victims of crime. He is the author of over three dozen articles or book chapters and author or editor of 5 books. He has also served as editor of the Journal of Crime and Justice. Dr. Lab is a regular consultant for the National Institute of Justice on research and funding activities in the areas of crime prevention, community policing, school crime, gang behavior and interventions, and police partnerships to address crime. He is currently leading an effort to develop a 5-year strategic plan to direct NIJ funding in the area of crime prevention. Dr. Lab is a Past President of the Academy of Criminal Justice Sciences and has served in many other capacities for ACJS, the Midwestern Criminal Justice Association, the Ohio Council of Criminal Justice Educators, and the Police Section of ACJS.
