So far this is a rather good textbook. I find it easy to read an very informative. The chapters are not disgustingly long so it encourages others to read for longer periods of time. Also it is good to supplement with Sedimentary Geology by the same author. These two books together are very good tools.

About the Author

Roscoe Pound (Nathan) (1870-1964) was dean of Harvard Law School. Before that he was dean at the University of Nebraska School of Law. He is known as the father of the sociological jurisprudence movement and one of America's earliest leaders advocating for legal realism. He authored numerous books, including The Spirit of the Common Law, Law and Morals, and Criminal Justice in America.

Uncommon spirit

Roscoe Pound was Carter Professor of Jurisprudence at Harvard University in the first half of the twentieth century. This text, derived from a series of lectures given in the 1910s, has held up over time (its initial publication was in 1921, and has been reissued periodically ever since) as a touchstone of historical and theoretical explorations of what common law is and how it operates, both in the British and American contexts.

Unlike constitutional law and other kinds of codified law from legislative bodies, the common law is more of a development from the masses, at least insofar as it connects with the judicial aspects of government which in turn recognises certain things as legal or illegal. Indeed, Pound sees the triumph of the idea of the supremacy of law over authority to be a victory of the spirit of the common law (specifically, he refers to the supremacy of the law over the Stuart monarchs in Britain, but also that common law practice has survived Renaissance, Reformation and the institution of Roman law).

Pound looks at the common law in different phases - feudal underpinnings, Puritan influences, relationship between judiciary and the Crown/executive authority, philosophers such as Locke, and growing judicial practice in the trans-Atlantic context during the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries.

Pound does have a distaste of law for law's sake, and warns against attitudes that are 'a natural result of measuring the law solely by standards drawn from the law itself.' He is strongly concerned with the idea that the law be accessible to all, regardless of background, education, or ability to pay - there should not be one law for the rich and another for the poor.

Law is for the betterment of society, and the spirit of the common law has this at heart, according to Pound. This text of Pound's, an enduring favourite, is a good exposition of how and why the law is important for a well-regulated society, and how the spirit of the common law needs to be cherished, preserved and strengthened by the legal profession for the sake of whole community.

Important Book, Poor Value Edition

This is not a criticism of Roscoe Pound's work but of the commercial packaging by Nabu Press. It is hard to say what is more offensive: Nabu Press' assertion that books from before 1928 necessarily contain typographical flaws (when the poor appearance of the text has a lot more to do with Nabu's reproduction techniques than the original printing), or its attempt to profit from work for which the copyright has expired and that rightfully belongs to the public. This product is available for free online and self-printing would likely be much less expensive than buying this copy. [...]

Very Thorough Guide to Calvin

2009 marks the 500th anniversary of the birth of John Calvin, Father of the Reformed Faith. This is a good year to reread the Institutes of the Christian Religion and to follow that up with this excellent book. Charles Partee, a professor of church history at Pittsburgh Theological Seminary, is a superior Calvin scholar and one of this book's strengths is his familiarity with the work of other Calvin scholars. Partee is a great admirer of Calvin which comes through clearly in this work. The book deals with the difference between the authentic John Calvin and Calvinism. After an in-depth overview of Calvin's theology, we are led on a tour of the Institutes. I found this extremely helpful. It has been a while since I read the Institutes end to end, but reading Partee's tour of the Institues was a very helpful refresher. Any person serious about the reformed faith would do well to read this book. It is advanced scholarship demanding serious thought and reading. The extensive footnotes are informative and offer fascinating detours, amplifications and explanations. Professor Partee knows the work of other Calvin scholars and spends a great deal of time analyzing their thought. The conclusion of the book reminds us that we cannot expect Calvin to address some of the contemporary issues in the church and in theology and the relationship between church and state and the Bible and science. He handles this discussion well.

I am a Reformed Church in America pastor and found every minute spent in this book helpful to me. It was a great refresher in Calvin and evocative discussion of many issues in the reformed faith. Partee "gets it" that theology is at its best and most worthwhile when it serves the church. Partee's book certainly did that for me. Partee spent part of his career as a pastor of churches and seems not to have forgotten that.

I would not recommend this as a primer on Calvin. Again, one should become familiar with the Institutes first. An abridged version is fine. The reader would also benefit from reading an introduction to the reformed faith such as Donald McKim's introduction to the reformed faith and John Leith's introduction to the reformed tradition and an introduction to John Calvin such as "Calvin for Armchair Theologians" before tackling this book. This at a minimum. However, any theologically trained minister or lay person should be able to garner some wholesome grain from this superior book.

Too deep and too wide, but...

Had I read the incisive review that precedes this one, I might have left the book on the shelf at the store, because I was not prepared for either the depth of Partee's discussion nor the breadth of the sources he evaluates so confidently--and I have still done little more than browse "The Institutes." On the face of it, I am not qualified to write a review.
But I did take the book from the shelf, I did sample some paragraphs, and I found myself responding to the little I read. For example, "Calvin's enemies are profoundly wrong in their caricature of him. Additionally and sadly, but not surprisingly, Calvin's friends often believe he says what they want to hear... Put another way, a number of Calvin's presumptive family of friends are less faithful to his legacy than his declared enemies" (p 5). Does that not make one want to know more? It does, and I bought the book.
Partee assumes his readers are ready for him, and he doesn't cut them any slack. Consider the history incorporated into a single introductory sentence on page 120: "The debate [about the Trinity] led through the heresies of the Ebionites, the Gnostics, Origen, the Monarchians, the Adoptionists, Arius, Apollinaris, Nestorius, and Eutyches until the orthodox formula adopted at the Council of Nicaea (325), which was supplemented at the Council of Chalcedon (451)." On the other hand, his engaging prose stimulates and informs: "... but when freedom is mentioned, Calvin thinks passions boil and wild tumults arise" (p 232). The dry theology that Partee quotes contrasts sharply with the lively language he uses to analyze it. And does he quote! I didn't count them all, but there are 99 citations, many annotated, in the 30-page chapter at the end of the book, and that is typical.
I am not competent to tell you whom he has omitted, but his range is fascinating. On page 97 he mentions Freud, quotes Mr. Collins from "Pride and Prejudice", adds a laudatory footnote about Huck Finn, and tacks on a Mark Twain anecdote about a man who encountered his conscience "...appearing as a small fiend 'covered all over with a fuzzy, greenish mold...' ". He rounds off this list of eminent theologians by rejecting "...the teaching of the eminent ethicist, Jiminy Cricket" at the top of the next page.
Whenever the discussion became too deep and too wide for me, I had recourse to the footnotes, which slice through the academic details with conversational personal insights. My only quarrel with the previous reviewer is that he did not mention Partee's sense of humor, which pervades and enlivens his entire book.
In conclusion, "The Theology of John Calvin" is extremely well-written, and I accept without knowing, that the scholarship is as sound as the exposition.

the CD doesn't match the book listening exercises..

The CD is ONLY for Windows XP or Vista.. and when I finally found a computer where I could play it (which was hard to find cause that's old software), it happens that it doesn't match with the book exercises. I was expecting to get on the cd the listening parts related to the book... it doesn't have them!!!!! now where can I get them? This was very dissapointing cause I bought the option with CD expecting just that, so I could work it on my classes.
