Fascinating. He's a bit sexist, but once you get over that there is truly an amazing well of rare literary lore in these pages. Must read.

One of the best

Jespersen is unsurpassed on language history, vocabulary and grammar. His racism and sexism were the norm at that time. We can forgive and laugh. A Jespersen of our age would hardly repeat his follies about race, manliness, effeminacy, business. This element, however, amounts to a primary source on European attitudes of a century ago. The edition that I bought, I'm happy to say, is in the good old format that you can tuck in your pocket. Don't buy the new printings with those W I D E margins.
