My niece and I enjoyed this book.. The pictures are wonderful and full of color. The details are easy to understand for small children. After reading this my niece was able to discuss frogs with her mom. She loved telling people what she learned from this book.

Q. Why is your book timely-- what makes it important right now?

A. With the recent release of Office 2013, and especially with its inclusion in Office 365, there will be many people in homes, schools, and businesses using Word for the first time this year. Many other users will soon upgrade from an earlier version of Office. My book is designed to help those people to find out how to accomplish common tasks in Word 2013.

Q. What information do you hope that readers of your book will walk away with?

A. Although Word is a very large and complex program, the individual tasks and the tools to do the tasks are generally simple and easy to use. When you know what you want to do, "Microsoft Word 2013 Plain & Simple" will recommend the right tool and explain how to use it. The numbered steps and corresponding screen shots take you from start to finish.

Q. What's the most exciting and/or important thing happening in your space?

A. The integration of the Office programs with cloud storage, roaming profiles, SkyDrive, and social media will make documents more interactive and less paper-oriented. The Office Web Apps contribute to the ability to use documents anywhere, from multiple devices.

Q. What are your top 5 tips and tricks?.

A. 1. In Print Layout view, move the cursor onto a heading paragraph. When a triangle appears in the left margin, click it to collapse or expand the text and lower-level headings under it, similar to the behavior of the Outline view.

2. Word 2013 can open most PDF files and format the resulting content as an editable Word document. If the document content appears but isn’t editable, the PDF file contains a picture of the text instead of the text itself. Word can’t convert pictures to text (this process is called Optical Character Recognition or OCR), but Microsoft OneNote might be able to do that for you.

3. If you insert a header building block and then insert a page number building block from the Top Of Page gallery in the Page Number button, the header building block is automatically removed. To combine a header building block and a page number in the same paragraph, use the Current Position gallery on the Page Number button, instead.

4. In Word 2013, when you move the cursor above a column or to the left of a row in a table, a plus sign (+) in a circle appears. Click the plus sign to add a column or row at that point.

5. When you drag a picture object in Word 2013, green alignment guides appear as the edges of the picture touch any of the four page margins, or as the center of the picture aligns with the horizontal or vertical center of the page, or as the top edge of the picture aligns with the top line of a text paragraph.

An excellent book for any Word user

Whether you are a novice Word user, just starting with Word 2013, or, like me, a Word veteran (every Windows version of Word since 2.0), you will find plenty of useful information in this book, not just for Word 2013 but for previous Ribbon versions (2007 and 2010), and the concepts introduced are applicable to all versions.

Every new version of Word introduces unfamiliar new features, and even longtime Word users often have a need to try out a previously unused Word function. This book does a great job of describing every feature of Word, both the new ones and the ones that are as old as Word itself.

Mastery of Word is not something that can be achieved overnight--even the earliest versions included a bewildering wealth of functions and features and an almost equal number of frustrating quirks and "gotchas"--but there are several possible approaches to learning Word.

The first approach could be called Total Immersion/Trial and Error--like throwing a kid into a pool to sink or swim. That's certainly how I started, and in Word 2003 and earlier, it was a simpler matter to explore all the toolbars and menus. In the newer Ribbon versions, where some tabs are contextual (they appear only in certain situations, such as when the insertion point is in a table or when a graphic is selected), this method is not as practical, and having a guide such as "Microsoft Word 2013 Plain & Simple" can be a huge help.

Another way to learn about Word is to read other users' questions and answers in online newsgroups and forums, including those sponsored by Microsoft (the current incarnation is the Microsoft Community; the Word forum is at [...] I had been using Word for about six years when I first got online and discovered Usenet newsgroups. Here it was possible, it seemed, to get the answer to any question. This is still true, to some extent, of the Community forums.

Perhaps the best way to learn about Word, however, especially the parts you don't personally use, is to answer users' questions, which often requires research outside your previous experience. And this is what so well qualifies Jay Freedman to write this book. As the author's note indicates, Jay has been answering users' questions online for over 15 years and has been a Microsoft MVP (Most Valuable Professional) since 2001. There is hardly any better way to get a broad understanding of the Word application than to, day in and day out, answer questions from users in all walks of life and areas of business, with varying requirements and a wide range of familiarity with the program. Jay has learned what users need to know (and the terms--not always Microsoft jargon--they use to ask for this information) and what sort of stumbling blocks they are likely to encounter.

Perhaps more important even than this experience, though, is Jay's writing style. I have always admired his ability to explain even the most complex Word topics in terms that users can understand, and this ability is put to use in this book. The step-by-step format of this book, each step illustrated with a numbered screen shot, makes it very easy to follow.

I was very favorably impressed with the comprehensiveness of this book, which doesn't just tell you what Word can do but actually details, step-by-step, how to do it. I was particularly pleased to see that Jay almost always included keyboard shortcuts (where available) in addition to the steps for accessing commands via the Ribbon. In the colored sidebars (TIP, CAUTION, TRY THIS, SEE ALSO) Jay provides the sort of "insider information" that is often learned only empirically (by many trials and frequent error) because it is not included in Microsoft documentation. The sidebars alone are probably worth the price of the book!

While awaiting delivery of the hard copy of this book, I had the opportunity to read some of it in the Kindle edition. I can't really recommend this except perhaps for portability: I can imagine a road warrior downloading it to Kindle for PC on his/her laptop for reference while on the road. Although the content of the Kindle edition is the same, the layout is much simpler, and you lose much of the effect of the colored sidebars (which are really bottombars). On the plus side, the screen shots are actually a little larger (and can be zoomed) on the Kindle (at least the Kindle Fire) than in the printed edition. Still, I think most users will find the printed version more useful.

Bottom line: I can heartily recommend this book to any Word user.

Compared to other Visual books on the market, I was very disappointed with this one. It's print was way to small and the pictures were a bit on the blurry side due to them being so small. Would not recommend to anyone not a little familiar with Word.

Thorough but full of mistakes

I have been studying Spanish for 7+ years and used this book as a text book in a college course that focused on the verb conjugations and tenses. We did about 90% of the exercises in the book. It's very thorough with the material that it covers, but the answers in the back are full of so many mistakes that the book almost isn't worth it. It was frustrating for us students to use the book and check our answers only to find mistakes. Eventually our professor stopped using the book.

Takes the torture out of grammar

I'm a Spanish tutor, and I find Gilda Nissenberg's Practice Makes Perfect: Complete Spanish Grammar the most user-friendly book of its type I've ever come across. The author has an uncanny ability to understand how an English speaker might get confused over Spanish grammatical structures, and explains very clearly how to avoid this `first language' influence and how to think in Spanish so that the structures, i.e., subjunctive, pronoun structure, conjunctions, clauses, make sense when one abandons what makes grammatical sense in English. The definitions and explanations are clear so that even grammatical terms that most native Spanish speakers would never use or need to learn become helpful in studying rather than confusing. There are lots of people that have reviewed this book to comment on its errors. Spanish is the third most spoken language in the world, after Mandarin and English, and given it's spoken in more countries than any other language, people will disagree on `correctness.'

This author does an excellent job covering nearly imaginable topic in Spanish from present tense verbs to double object pronouns. Indeed, this book is more than just a workbook. It is a comprehensive guide for students of every level learning how to speak Spanish. The student will appreciate the fact that the book teaches practical Spanish as it is spoken today, providing concise but thorough down-to-earth, easy-to-comprehend explanations that enable the learner to comprehend the most difficult areas of Spanish grammar.
This work book is filled with exercises in different formats for different learning styles. It also has thematic vocabulary panels for more natural learning. After this book, you should progress with Escribe y Repasa, which is much more challenging--providing more complex structures and readings in Spanish as well as dialects such as stories with gaucho slang, Catalan, among others.

Excellent review for someone with previous knowledge

Fantastic series!

What kind of learner am I?

I teach in a university-based adult education program, where many of my students are native Spanish speakers. My high school and college Spanish classes were a distant memory, but when I chose this book and its companions (pronouns and verbs), I DID remember enough to communicate at a basic level. I've found this series excellent for improving my Spanish enough for my students to comment enthusiastically after a relatively short time. I have no instructor, but I learn well from books, and I already knew how to pronounce Spanish words. For someone else in my position, I can't recommend this series highly enough--it's the best I found after extensive searching, library loans, etc.

Getting the most from this product:

I also recommend getting all three books (complete grammar, pronouns, and verbs) as I did. I've found that it's been helpful to work through a few sections in one book, switch to one of the others, and move ahead in similar jags through all three at once. I can tell when to switch by when I start to feel like I'm getting in over my head--I think it would be difficult to learn alone using just one of these.

Another tip: This series is pure grammar, but there's plenty of culture and literature available free online. I've supplemented the books by reading Spanish-language newspapers online (my favorite seems to be the BBC/Latin America), pasting the text into [...] to check my reading as needed. Often, I've translated these in their entirety for practice (the free translation's enough to understand, but not a particularly good translation). I also found a Spanish-speaking penpal by visiting Spanish chatrooms, and write back and forth frequently as a way to practice my written Spanish. These activities have provided the learning richness that simple grammar texts aren't intended to offer.

Who shouldn't use this?

However, if (for example) you know no (or almost no) Spanish now or remember very little vocabulary, this would be a poor choice. It definitely assumes some level of familiarity with the language.

Fantastic Series!

The only thing I did not like was that the pleasure of reading the story, too soon, came to an end (I often get that, I suppose it is an occupational hazard of readers and their love of stories and authors). If I do not like a story, commonly, I do not ever finish reading it.
I liked and cared about the characters, I wanted to find out what would happen next and I felt fully exchanged with, satisfied when finished with the story, wanting more.
I look forward to more stories from the author, I am sure you will too!

Fun read full of suspense

I had already read the first book in this series and liked it so much I went ahead and bought the whole collection. The next two books in the series didn't disappoint. They were equally full of the same mystery and suspense that kept my attention as the first. I found the bits of humor that the author has peppered throughout the book very entertaining and added a bit of fun to the whole thing. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a good page turner.

Sarah Woods Mystery series volume 3 an enjoyable ride!

I was in withdrawal from book number 10 until I came across books 11 & 12 bought them & bought number 13 coming out January 30th 2015. I have not read many authors able to write such an engrossing story line as this woman I can't put the books down. I'm writing this at 1AM & know if I go offline & start reading book 11 I'll be up till I finish it!

Her plot is strong & always interesting right from book 1. Until Jennifer came into my life I didn't know why I didn't like the first book in a series. It's because the author spends so much time setting up the plot I get bored. Jennifer just starts the story, yes she does give some background about the characters, but not endlessly. Her characters are believable & Sarah, her heroine, isn't your normal helpless female. She is strong enough to take the lumps life gives you & move on sure sometimes reluctantly but she puts one foot in front of the other no matter how heart sick she is feeling. I can relate to this. Carter her partner is a bit older than her but very believable as the detective who hires her to train her. He is a bit grumpy like most men & certainly keeps his feelings to himself but they make a great team.

If you are looking for an interesting mystery with a great story & good characters then I highly recommend these books.

Nobuo TSUJI is the premier authority on Japanese aesthetics, having studied the topic for nearly a half century. Lineage of Eccentrics: Matabei Kuniyoshi, published in 1988 by Perikansha Publishing, offered a reappraisal of the artistic practices of Iwasa Matabei, Kano Sansetsu, Ito Jakuchu, Soga Shohaku, Nagasawa Rosetsu and Utagawa Kuniyoshi, artists who had been considered peripheral to Japanese art history up to that point. By focusing on these artists, Tsuji was able to revive present day interest in their work and spirit. In addition to his writings, Tsuji has also left a significant mark on the education and development of Japan s art community through his work as an art university chancellor and museum director.

About the Author
David Berger is co-founder and editor-in-chief of the German periodical "Doctor Angelicus." A corresponding member of the Pontifical Academy of St. Thomas Aquinas, he has published articles in such journals as "Angelicum," "Divinitas," and "Gregorianum." He is author of, among other books, "Thomismus" (2001), "Thomas von Aquin begegnen" (2002), and most recently "Thomas von Aquins Summa theologiae" (2004).

An invaluable tool for today

Scholarly and straight-shooting, Thomas Aquinas and the Liturgy ably and succinctly demonstrates from the life and teaching of the Angelic Doctor his profound grasp of the nature of the Liturgy--the active, bodily contemplation of Christ's redeeming work and its renewal in our very midst--something which the Church of our day needs urgently to rediscover. This book is an invaluable tool for that crucial task.

A vigorous and superb treatment

David Berger has produced a true gem in this little work. In a remarkably brief space he manages to summarize the entire teaching of Aquinas on the liturgy, the sacraments, and public prayer, while at the same time finding occasion for striking insights into his theology and connections to contemporary issues. The chapter on Aquinas's philosophical anthropology all by itself is worth the price. I recommend this book to all of my students who are studying the sacred liturgy and the dogmatic, moral, and ascetical theology behind it.

Deep but worth the dive

St. Thomas was a mystic (Page 17). He said that the psalms contain the entire contents of theology, including praise, thanksgiving, and prayer (14). The Eucharist was the center of his life (15). He used the liturgy as the authority for his Summa Theologica (19), the third part of which presents his explanation of the Mass.

We gain our knowledge through our five senses. We integrate and expand our knowledge through our mind’s interior sense (57). In keeping with the Incarnation (64), body and soul are involved (55). The causal mediation of salvation comes through visible signs (66). Whereas a pre-theological eye might see the Mass as simply a system of signs and symbols, that view misses the invisible spiritual realities (52), discernible by our interior sense. The liturgy is a symbolic expression of the entire economy of salvation, using allegory, tropology , and anagogy (38). The Mass itself is an image of Christ’s passion. The priest is an image of Christ (29). The Mass is both sacrifice and sacrament (30). During the Mass of St. Thomas’ time, the priest made many, many signs of the cross. St. Thomas explains their appropriateness (35). Through the liturgy, Christ continues the work of redemption in, with, and through His Church (70).

Thomas’ analectical approach considers the beauty, mysticism, and tradition of the liturgy (46). Beauty comes from above, not from man (46). The mysticism comes from theological objectivity, especially the evident chasm between man and God (48). Without the mysticism, the liturgy devolves into social work, eventually devoid of the spiritual (79). Active participation does not mean Catholic social work (86). Tradition comes from the long history of the prayers and ritual (50). It passes on the divine (84). In the liturgy, man is drawn from the profane to the divine (85).

All seven Sacraments use signs and symbols of spiritual realities, but all point to the Holy Eucharist, where Christ is present substantially. In the other Sacraments, Christ is present in His instrumental power (80). Other ministries similarly point toward the Eucharist (82). All of the graces Christ earned for us come to us objectively through His human nature (74). The supernatural works of the God-man were physical (77).

“Transubstantiation” is an integral part of the Holy Eucharist. Modern “explanations” are distortions of the reality (90). Transubstantiation is a mystery that can be comprehended only by faith, which rests upon divine authority (93). The substance of the bread is transformed into the essence of the Body and Blood of Christ (97). The human soul and divine nature of Christ are present (102). God, Who is the Cause of substance and accidents, preserves the accidents while removing the substance of the bread (107). Christ remains until the appearances are no longer, because the relationship of Christ to those species is then taken away (104). Today’s scientists equate matter with substance, thereby confusing the metaphysical concept of substance (99).
